Hey Im looking for some advise, I have an 07 Tacoma 4x4
Its only been thru one winter, I was it weekley, keept inside garage.
My frame is starting to rust in several spots, not bad yet, but should I
be concerned? Anyone else have this problem?
My frame has a lot of surface rust after 4 winters. I should note I'm lake snow country and probably see more salt than 99% of owners. I plan on undercoating in the next month.

I live where we don't get a whole lot of snow but where we do get a lot of salt on the roads. I wash my truck during the winter but not every week. My 05 also has some small rust spots on the frame, but not a lot. I have been trying to decide if I should try to do something about them, since I might keep this truck for a really long time. It would be interesting to hear what other people have done about this. I guess I could handle the rust if it got so bad that Toyota bought it back from me for more than it was worth in a few years ;-)
No concern there---the worst thing you can do for rust in the winter is to park in the garage everyday. all the ice and slush filled with salt thats stuck to the frame melts off much more than it would if it was still outside, accelerating the rusting.
I've posted about this same topic. You're not alone, though this is the first I've heard about rust on the 07's. I guess it was just a matter of time. My 05 frame started out like yours, with a few spots of rust after one winter. By now, after 4 winters, it is completely covered in rust. I've painted it over with Rustoleum, but that isn't really a solution. My opinion is that, like the 95-00 frames that Toyota now admits weren't given the proper rust protection at the factory, the 05+ frames likewise don't have the proper protection either. I notice in my area (the northeast) Fords, Chevys and Dodges that are even older than my truck and their frames are just fine. Even old Tundras are fine. But on every 05 Tacoma I spot on the road, I check, and there's rust. I've complained to the dealer and Toyota about this, and so should you, but the response I got is that the warranty only covers total rust through, not surface rust. But like you, I am concerned because my plan was to keep the truck for a long time. It's only surface rust now, but it's only a matter of time before the truck won't be able to pass inspection because of the rust.
Good suggestion on the rust converter. I have used that stuff before and it really works. For some reason I had not thought of using it on my frame. Maybe because when I had to use it before it was to hold together some old POS vehicle that was almost dead, not my 3 year old truck!
There is a spot on the frame that is almost completely blocked by the gas tank. This is the spot w/ the most rust on my frame. I bet it will be a trouble spot for a lot of people-- check this spot.

so basically its all your fault. haha
Never had that problem with my other cars!! And for your info, I wash it every week and rinse the salt off each night with warm water. ha ha...
was starting to see some surface rust this last spring on my '06. decided to get to it before i need POR or some other rust converting stuff. had very little signs of rust...mainly around welds and where two pieces of metal were riveted or bolted together. used a small SS wire brush and a can of brake clean, then went over everything i could get to with this: - Krylon Products Group
not sure what the results will be with this product, but appearnatly you can leave plain new steel outside for up to two years if you have it coated with this stuff. real messy as i used the brush on to avoid overspray. seems to do very well. water beads, and rolls right off. kinda nasty stuff to apply. it reminds you of a mix of vegetable oil and melted candle wax. eventualy it "sets up", but is still slightly tacky. will update this thread if i can find it in the spring.
Awww give me a break! When was the last time you heard of a daily driver having his truck rust completely through? I am sure someone has a monkey's uncle that had one but overall? I plan on driving my Taco until the wheels fall off but I don't expect the frame to fail in the meantime. I think this is a lot of worry about nothing. If you want to craw under your truck everyday and wash her off with warm water and towel her belly off, go for it.
Mines in the driveway with dirt on it, getting cold and tomorrow I might even drive off to work without warming it up first!

those wheels will fall off a lot sooner without propper maintenance. toyotas are very reliable...when taken care of, and for as much $$ as i have in it, i'd be an a**hole not to.
toyota has bought back thousands of 1st generation Tacomas due to rust through.
