Default Auto trans downshifting?

I just bought a used '06, and was wondering, did the factory set the transmission to hold lower gears while I'm going down hills (at 60 mph on the street), or is it possible mine has been re-programmed?

Accelerating, it seems to hold gears fairly smart (for an auto) and the shifts are a bit abrupt...

Either way, this thing sort of screams!

I think what you're experiencing is the engine braking capability of the vehicle. I have an 08 and when going downhill, if I tap on the brake pedal, the tranny automatically shifts to a lower gear to help with braking. It feels a bit funny if you're not used to it but it's perfectly normal and works really well.

I agree - completely normal. I remember thinking it was a bit different the first few days I drove my truck, but now I don't even notice.
