Default malfunction indicator light

The malfunction indicator light came on on my 06 tacoma. It seems to be running fine. What could be the problem? The gas lid is tight. Thats not it. It only has 26k miles on it. I have been changing the oil myself and I have not shut off the maintenance light since my last change. Do I really have to bring it in to the garage. My local toyota dealer sucks and I am dreading it if I do. Any help would be great. Thanks for the responses.

Go to your local Autozone, Pepboys or O'Reilys. Ask to borrow a code reader. See why that MIL is on. They'll let you borrow one for free, and you can check the codes in the parking lot.

Also, your truck is still under 36k warranty, any repair should be free.

Are you saying you DID NOT reset the maintenance reminder? If you haven't reset it in the last 5K miles, then that's why it's on. How to reset it is in the owner's manual. If you reset it and it's still on, follow the above advice.

I wondered about that too, Moose... but I thought maybe he was talking about two different lights?

I dunno, I'm kinda confused by his post....

the malfunction indicator light is the same as a CEL (check engine light)

he needs to get it checked out, I would take it to the dealer, or if you know someone with a scantool

He is talking about two different lights. The "Maintenance Light" is nothing more than a light that comes on to remind you of the 5000 oil change interval. The MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) ... aka, CEL (Check Engine Light), sometimes also called SES (Service Engine Soon) ligth comes on when there is an emissions related trouble-code stored in the ECU.

Thanks for the clarification, guys. I'm familiar with the maintenance light, but not with the MIL/CEL/SES.

Maybe the OP will update us....

I second that. Thanks. Just goes to show that we've never had trouble with our trucks. In this regard, I don't mind being the uneducated!
