The wife wants to get rid of her 2003 Honda Pilot (160K miles, good shape, has ALL the extras) and also her 2004 Honda civic (55K miles, also good shape, regular extras) She wants to trade these in on a new 2009 Taco, 4 cyl. auto...very basic model. This way she can go from 2 payments of about 850 a month to one paymaent of 300 or so. I'm not sure she'll like riding in the Taco compared to the Pilot (leather seats, nav, electric everything....) and I doubt it will get the milage of the civic (35 - 38....for real!)
Is the V6 a better truck than the 4 cyl?
What do you guys think?
Thanks!

I don't know about your wife, but most don't think like us dudes. Everytime mine has decided it was a good idea to go basic, it didn't last long. There is usually a honeymoon period, in which she acts like all is fine to avoid admitting a mistake. Then suddenly (3 to 6 months later), she must make an immediate drastic change back to "non basic". It usually ends up costing me much moolah. My last go-round ended up with my buying (at an inflated price), pretty much the exact same vehicle that I damned near gave away in her attempt to go basic. I guess it just depends on your wife. Maybe go for a more "loaded" vehicle to start with? In the end, if you are like me, you will just give up and give in, so no rational logic will be able to apply right now. It may be better that way in the long run, despite the pain to your wallet. Gotta keep them happy.

I think both of those cars should already be paid off (6yrs and 5yrs) how long is the loan??? Second if they work why would you want to go back into payments for a Taco....but if she's crazy enough to do such a thing in this economic environment....then FORBID HER!!! never understood that mentality....sorry now I'm off the soapbox....I think its silly...oh yeah add the MPG you mentioned also.

Great, logical post you have here ...
BINGO ... been there and done that one too and also regretted it.
But .. IF .. they can sell 2 used vehicles .. and cut $500.00 out of the monthly budget ... and cut insurance by 1/2 ... I can see his point too.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the 4 cylinder. It drives decently but compared to Toyota's newest transverse 4 cylinder of the same displacement, the 1AR-FE, it's terribly underpowered and less efficient. Granted, FWD and RWD drivetrains are apples to oranges, but still it's worth comparing.
Considering the weight difference, I'd say the 1AR is extremely thrifty. Have her look at the Venza and a Tacoma. While many don't care for the exterior styling of the Venza, the interior is fantastic. Tons of cargo room, and people space. It might be a good compromise. And instead of $850 monthly, you might be able to get the Venza for around $400-600 monthly depending on which model you choose. That's still a $250-450 monthly savings.
Well she did it.....Bought a new 2009 SR5 TRD Off Road PreRunner edition of the Tacoma Double Cab with the V6 in 2 wheel drive.....lots of nice features (just like my Tundra!!) And she claims she's got 21 MPG??????
I gotta check her math.....
