Default Regular cab 4x2 as commuter

There's a chance I may be working in another location within the next few months that will require a 115 round trip commute. If so I'd like to get a small economical truck to make the drive, and I'm leaning towards an 05+ Tacoma 4x2.
Does anyone else have a decently long commute in one of these small trucks? I like the Tacoma because I've heard you can get near 30mpg on the highway with them, and I'd prefer to drive a small truck over a small car. The drive is relatively flat (just rolling hills occasionally) and I don't have a strong preference over 5 speed or auto.

I have modest commute (44 miles round trip) and use my 2X4 Reg cab 5 spd, 95% secondary highway (60mph), rolling hills. I have never gotten 30 mpg, 27-28 mpg is what I average, depending on weather.

Compared to the other small PU's I have owned ('80 Datsun and '82 Chevy LUV) my Tacoma seems like a nice, big roomy truck. It rides and handles very nicely at highway speeds, but don't expect Camry-like comfort.

I would recommend a cruise control, if available.

My '06 4 X 2 regular cab automatic gets 30.5 mph on highway/divided secondary at 55 - 60 mph. I don't exceed 2000 rpms when leaving a stop. I think the comfort is above average - I am 6'1" 207 lbs.

My two cents worth - I don't think that you'll go wrong

ps - the AT gets better mileage than the manual.

Good Luck

i get 29 mpg on the hiway
now you might want to sit in the bench seat for a while as it can be uncomfortable for me and a few others on a long drive ( 6 ft+)

I would give up an appendage to have a regular cab Taco with the 4.6 V8.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I do need to sit in the bench seat a while before making the decision. I also need to make sure somebody sells an armrest. That's seriously a deal breaker for me if one isn't available.

As a reference for you, I had an 06' Pre Runner SR5 with 4 cyl/ 5 sp. It had pw/pdl/cc and it got about 25 mpg on the highway. I found myself downshifting into 4th and even 3rd on the taller hills but other wise it was a great truck. I ended up with a diagnosis of Tundra Fever and traded it for more than I paid for it. Sometimes when I watch my fuel gauge drop I wish I still had the little gas sipping 4 cyl.
