Default transmission service

Do you have to take the Tacomas to the dealer to have the transmission fluid changed? I thought I remembered reading on here somewhere that you needed a special tool to pump the fluid out or change it. I called my dealer and they want $200 to service the transmission which seams really high. Will a normal mechanic or a quick lube type place be able to change the fluid for me or will they need the special tool? Thanks for your help.

.

I would never take my Tacoma to a .. "quick lube place" .. especially for transmission work.

I never have, my dad just mentioned that he had his transmission fluid changed at one for about $70 and wanted to know why Toyota was so much more. Are they doing more than just changing the fluid out?

it all depends on what year taco you have. the newer ones take special fluid and require a special filling procedure. if not done correctly catastrophic trans failure is very possible and these trannys arent cheap or readily avail. i would recomend calling another dealer as most willoffer price matching.

-------o--------o--------o------

A lot more Tacoma transmission info. on these 2 sites ...
----> Toyota Tacoma Forums - Tacoma World
----> Toyota Nation

I don't think that you can pull the pan, replace the gasket, filter and all the fluid for $70.00.

IMO ... the "quick lube place" will skip something ... the parts cost more than that.

The cost is not because of what they're changing, it's how it has to be done.

Read thru this thread for the instructions:
