I just bought a 09 Tacoma Access Cab. My wife and I both find the seats extremely uncomfortable. We were wonder what other folks thought and if anyone has come up with a solution.
I'm really not being a smartass.... but didn't you test drive before buying? Seems like that would have let you both know how the seats feel. Just sayin...
With that out of the way, did you get the standard SR5? Those seats are different than the TRD seats that come in both the TRD OffRoad and the TRD Sport trucks. Most people feel that the TRD seats are more comfortable than the standard seats. Dunno what the cost might be, but it might be worth it to you to get some TRD seats.... maybe even find some good ones (2005+) in a junkyard and save some $$.
Yeah, we test drove it. The seats are fine for a while but we find on long drives (1 hour +) they start getting really uncomfortable. Should have thought about test driving for an hour I guess.
I traded a Tahoe, which is like driving your lazy boy, so I expected it would'nt be as comfortable.
The TRD seats are a good thought, I may check them out. I was thinking maybe an after market cushion/seat cover of some sort might do the trick.
My wife has a 09 DC TRD Sport and the seats are awesome! We've driven the truck to FL from NC which is a 12 hour drive to the panhandle and the seats hold up. We also drive to Sugar Mountain alot during the winter for snowboarding and thats a 6 hour drive one way as well.
I have the TRD Sport seats and they suck on long trips. I get out of the truck and feel like an old man. My brother has a Tahoe LTZ an its unreal on long trips. Like a sofa. Get used to it.
Obviously, different seats will feel different to different people. I never tried the SR5 seats because the SR5 truck was not equipped the way I wanted it. So we bought a TRD OffRoad and got the TRD seats, which I am very happy with, including on long trips. My only wish is that they were electrically adjustable, including a height adjustment, with two memory settings. I'm gettin lazy in my old age, and Mrs Splicer & I each drive the truck.... and each have our preferred seat adjustment.
Like Splicer said - I guess the seats work for some and not for others. My TRD Sport seats seem really comfortable to me and our other two vehicles are an Infiniti and a Lexus, so they have some good competetion.
It's funny that so many never drive the SR5 because so many neighbors around here and I don't have the TRD packages. We get the trucks to get around in the snow and haul stuff at a price we can afford. Guess no one around here wants to, or can, spend the extra money for the TRD packages. Anyway, I've never sat in a TRD seat before. Now I'm really wondering what they're like.
I used to think the SR5 wasn't that comfortable, but we eventually got used to them. Now we find them more comfortable than my wife's leather highlander seats! Maybe they grow on you in time as you get used to the seat shape? I don't know. I do know that my wife needs a lot of lumbar support and uses one of those little pillows that have little balls/beans in them (not sure how to describe it but it's like a little bean bag pillow but it provides resistance and wants to go back to it's normal shape) whenever she sits in the passenger seats of both vehicles because they don't have the lumbar adjustment. Just a thought (or maybe good news in that you might get used to them in time).

The seat cushions certainly are firm, but I suppose that's for long term durability than comfort. Softer seats usually tear over time as the material stretches from getting in and out of the car/truck. Used cars/trucks with soft leather seats always seem the worst hit because some owner's just don't take care of them. The TRD seats are firm as well. My best advice is to break them in or use a memory foam topper (cut to shape) under a seat cover. Since I normally drive alone, I've noticed the driver's seat is a little softer than the passenger seat now, and that's after 4 years of wear. Though, I only have 56k miles.
My 1991 MR2's seats are comfy, but they are well worn (19 years+; 05/90 prod) and I have to put a book under my seat to help the seat springs.
You are not the only one. I just got my 2009 Access cab last night. The seats are terrible... especially the head "restraint" (notice it is no longer a head "rest"). I think lawyers designed it to minimize the chance of injury in a wreck, but they didn't take into account the damage done by driving it daily. My back and neck hurts after 5 minutes of driving. If I can't find a solution I going to have to ditch this one.

I just do not know what to say.... how could you buy a new vehicle without realizing how badly the seats fit you? I'm not criticizing you, but I really cannot understand how something like this can happen.
You say you may have to ditch it... Does your state have a grace period, or 'cooling-off' period, so that you have a limited time during which to return a vehicle that you are not happy with after purchase?
The SR5 seats are soft & the TRD are hard, I drove both b4 for I went looking for my Taco , but I have take my SR5 & added the TRD BillStein shocks & added the 17th wheels and added a TRUTrack to the rear & I like it better than the TRD. The only difference now is out let in the back.
