I wanted to say Hi! I just purchased a 2000 MasterCraft and I need a vehicle to tow it. I'm currently towing with a Motorhome but it only gets 6 mph. I also have a 2008 Honda SI.

So I'm thinking about selling the SI and getting a Tacoma for day trips to the lake. 100miles away.

But I also don't want to be lacking when I'm towing 5400lbs up a steep ramp. I assume I would need 4x4 as well?

Any suggestions

Anyone have a similar weight thier pulling?

Welcome to TS ... you will like it here.

Are there any hills between you and the lake ?? ..... IMO, a Tacoma is a little light to tow a 5,400# package up a hill.

Is a Tundra possible? They are super for towing.

PS .... Nice boat & RV.

I had a 2006 4lt tacoma that I was using to pull a jeep on a 18ft car hauler (~6k lbs estimated) and while the tacoma will pull that load ok, I eventually decided to upgrade to the the tundra because I like to have some extra power left over. The tacoma was downshifting from 5-3rd gear going up the steep hills where the offroad park is. Personally IMHO, if you will use this boat all the time then definately get the Tundra, If you only move it several times a year then the tacoma is plenty. The one other detail I found is that the tacoma handles much more like a car and will get about 6 mpgs more unloaded on the highway, so if the latter is true I would recommend it as a more friendly daily driver than the Tundra.

I pull a 3000 pound travel trailer with my 4x2 double cab, and I feel like thats about as heavy I would go. Other people in my camping user group pull heavier trailers with their tacos, but they have 4x4s. The rear axle ratio is different in the 4x4s and that makes a better towing experience.
