I have an 06 Tacoma Pre Runner TRD and the Check Engine light has come on at 60K. I know that you can reset the Oil light but when I do this the check engine light doesn't go off. Any ideas of how to turn this thing off? It came on right at 60K so I'm sure it's just a reminder but I'm not paying Toyota to do a 60K service when I can do all the items on the list. Thanks for any answers in advance...
As far as I know the CEL is not programmed to come on at certain mileage intervals. Thats what the maintenance light is for
You need to get a scan tool, like a scan gauge II or something similar. Find the code and then google the code to find out what it is. Or take it to the dealer and have them take a look with their scan tool. That might cost you a pretty penny though.
It's best to pull the code to see what it is, unless you knowingly tripped it.
One of the easiest ways to clear the CEL is to disconnect the negative battery cable for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. If you don't want to lose your stereo memory and clock setting, you can pull all of the EFI related fuses. Usually EFI and EFI-2 will do the trick.

Take to most any auto parts store and they will hook a OBD reader to the port and give you the P code and tell you what it means. They can also clear it so that the light goes off. They do this for free, hoping you will purchase the parts needed to remedy the problem from them.
