TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tacoma Mileage?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I drove a 97 Tacoma 4X4 extended cab, 2.7l, 4-cyl, 5sp w/3:42 diff's for 80K. My mileage was 20 average. May get 22 highway if you keep it under 65. My mileage towing 3000# was 18 highway. Never towed city. I would say that the average fuel ecomomy for the 2.7 would be 19-21. I was not impressed with the economy of the Tacoma. My 98 V-6 4_runner with a 5sp and 4:10 diffs gets 20 always. And has lots more power !!!! Doesn't seen to make any difference as to speed, a/c mode, or city traffic. I am very pleased with the fuel economy of it. I haven't heard anything about the V-6 Taco's. The are a little more HP [185/193 ??] than the 4_runners. The economy could be different.
My previous 99 Tacoma a V-6 4x4 x-cab got as high as 23 while driving across Nebraska. Normally I would get around 17 ,City-Highway mix., As for city or in 4 wheel forget about it I could watch my guage go down, right around 14mpg though.
I have an auto V-6 I got 17.6 on my last tank 1/2 the tank went to freeway @ 75 & four wheeling last weekend & 1/2 country/city back and forth to work the rest of the week.

I have a 1994 4x4 Xtracab Toyota Pickup with the 3.0 V6 and in mixed driving I'll get about 17 mpg pretty reliably. The best I've done on the highway is 23 out in Eastern Washington (nice and flat). Lately I've been getting about 19, maybe 20 on the highway.
I've been thinking about getting a 2006 tacoma and I was pleasanty surprised to see that the gas mileage estimate numbers haven't changed too much. Now if I can sell the 94'.....
I get a steady 17mpg. Makes no difference in mixed driving or all highway as I drive around 75 to 78mph on the highway. It's an 06 4x4 double cab automatic. The funny thing is I have tried to baby the snot out of a few tanks to see If I can get any better and it's still the same.
No matter what it's still better than the 13mpg I got on a good day in my old 2000 V8 Tundra.
I drive almost the same way as golftundra on hwy (70 to 80). And I also have an '06 Taco V6 auto 4x4 but an Access Cab. With no bed cover, I get about 17 (+/- 0.5) mpg on hwy. On a Philly traffic, about 15 to 16 mpg.
Anyone out there tested their mpg with a bed cover??? Those covers claim 10% improvement on gas mileage (due to aerodynamics). Can anyone verify this???

The study that I read indicated there was a 10% reduction in drag. I don't know how much this drag reduction would increase mpg. I don't think you can count on a 10% increase in milage. I put a hard cover on my Dodge but shortly after, I put a big, heavy, draggy Buckstop bumper on the truck and I'm sure this negated any increase in mileage that the cover might have added.
