Default tacoma double cab ride quality

I'm seriously interested in buying a 2-wheel drive double-cab Tacoma. However, I took a 2-wheel drive for a test ride with the TRD off-road package and found the ride was fairly rough. I commute 100 miles per day and would like a better ride. My question is, does the non-TRD equipped Tacoma with the Tockico shocks ride any better, or are than any known/trusted after market solutions to make the ride better. ( the only off-road stuff I'll do is at the boat ramp). -Thanks

I am not happy with the pavement ride of my non-TRD double cab either, although others on this board take exception. Some people say that the TRD is actually the better riding of the two.

I often read that Bilstein or OME (Old Man Emu) Comfort shocks are helpful, although I have the suspicion that almost any shock recommendations for a Toyota truck are heavily biased toward off-road usage.

The TRD comes with the Tockicos it does NOT come with the Bilsteins like the Extra cab TRDs do.

I found my coilovers in the front and Doestch techs in the rear relieved the rough ride. I can compare the two, I have both a 4x4 double cab and a prerunner double cab

I bought used, freshly rebuild and charged Fabtech coilovers for $450.
[I would not buy fabtechs new, Sway a ways are cheaper $625 at Camburg with a TTORA discount]

The rear shocks can be bought directly from Doestch tech for about $100 a pair

The rear Downey shackle was $45 and a BPV bracket [brake proportioning valve ]was $10

with coilovers, it is a matter of unbolting and rebolting. no spring compression

the rear again is simple bolt unbolt. an Add a leaf is probably a better lift but more work to install.

finally I paid a friend for the install, much less than the going rate.

I have a bad back and knees [including one of those disability placards on the dash] or I would have tried it with my sons' help

OME suspensions are also an option [have not riden in a truck with it, but the guys that have it like it.] you will need to get the springs compressed to remove the top plate and compressed to assemble the OME [old man emu]

The non-TRD Tacoma rides significantly better than the TRD Taco.

Cmon guys, the Tacoma is a TRUCK and not a wannabe truck sitting on a car frame like the highlander, pilot, etc. If you want a smooth ride on the freeway to grandma's house, pick up a car, but if you want a truck then accept a truck's characteristics. After all, that is one of the reasons a truck is a truck... cause it's tough!!!

My two cents.

True they are not sports cars, however you can improve the ride both on and off road. I have up graded my suspension to King coilovers in the front and bilstein 7100 remote reservior shock with custom shock mounts and it is like night and day on the road and off compared to my prerunner.

I have gone a bit farther than needed to improve the ride. Most guys want to add lift so, as long as you are going UP you might as well improve the ride

All I did was lower my tire pressure.

the question if your asking is tacoma's do ride like truck's and are very rought riding truck's that's why i didn't get a prerunner i was looking at before the tundra and i also fealt the tacoma's seat's were paper thin on seat's padding and nothing like that of the tundra's taco's are great truck's dont get my wrong but for my money's worth i fealt the tacoma has some short fall's ,week v6 engine ,poor crash test result's, door design that looks rather cheap, and a dated look...tacoma is due for changes in mid 04 expect a major freshing ground up....

Are you... me? Seriously... I was looking at a Double-Cab Tacoma when I was shopping for Tundras. I liked the way it looked and the size, but after driving a Tundra, the power, handling, and ride just weren't the same. My comment to everybody who asked why I wasn't considering a Tacoma: "It's not a Tundra."

Anyway, yes, the Tacoma has a "truck-ish" feel, but that's WHAT IT IS! Whoever said that that it is built on a truck platform not a car platform is completely correct. If you want a small-midsize truck, you have to expect it to handle and ride like one. Don't get me wrong, Tacomas are pretty damn cool and they last until YOU screw it up and crash it!

b.f i baught my tundra, i drove pretty much every configaration of tacos around. trd, prerunner, the regular basic one, v6 both 4 bangers. then when i drove the tundra, was like damn, this is the truck for me. my mom really wanted to get me the xtra cab prerunner with the 4 banger in it, rode pretty rough. and even with like 3 grand nocked off it was still like 17k, and my truck we got for just under 21k. i mean its just my preference but the tundra is well worth the little amount of money more. just my oppinion. good luck

Default Tacoma ride

I just purchased an 01 Tacoma crew cab(4 dr) basicly to share with my teen-age son. This my 4th Tacoma and I was surprised to find a rather harsh ride. Checked the tire pressure and those tire store idiots had 36PSI in each tire(265/70-16). The label on the door jam called for 26PSI, but just for a little better handling, I opted for 28PSI. Much improved ride. I'm also sure that the ride would vary with type of tire, also.

I did have an Ivan Stewart LE Tundra for about 8 months(got tired of fighting the balance problem with those wheels) and much nicer ride and seats, if the bigger, more expensive Tundra fits you.
