I've been using 91 octane for years...

Just to tag this thread longer... someone mentioned that it doesn't really matter where you buy your fuel because it all come from the same pipeline. It's what happens between the time of extraction from the pipeline until it reaches the tank of your vehicle. When we used to stick the tanks daily at my father's gas station we would find more condensation would develop when the underground tanks were less than half full. Therefore; it does make a difference where you buy your gas, more importantly how much gas a particular station sells and how low they let the fuel get in the tanks before reservicing. Also, I wouldn't recommend fueling your vehicle while the underground tanks are being reserviced. This is the worst time as the water and any containments are being mixed in the tanks. Thats why I try to buy gas from a station that sells a lot of it, chances are if they sell enough gas, condensation doesn't get a chance to form; it's no guarantee, but a better chance of not pumping in water in your tank. Also, different vehicles respond to various brands differently based on additives put in the fuel at the refinery.

I am deciding on what octane to run in my 07 Tacoma. The owner manual states 87 Octane or better is accepatable. However, it put in parenthesis "(Research 91)." Anybody know what they mean by that? Does it mean we should do our own research? Does it mean they are still doing research? Or is it citing a specific piece of research they have done. I'm clueless on this issue.
Thanks in Advance for Any Input!

87 is the rating assigned by the system we use in North America...

91 is the rating assigned by the system used in Europe (and other parts of the world).

So...

If you're driving around the US use 87 octane or higher.

If you're driving around Europe use 91 or higher.

It states that the test were conducted with 91 and you can use it too and it's also fine to use 87. I have tried both and tested performance and gas mileage and see no difference at all and mine is a 2001 Tacoma, 2.7 that was tested with 91 also. I have 87,000 on my 01 and it purrs like a kitten and performs like a new engine.
So what gas do you use in your truck?
