TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "'05 Tacoma V6 needs 91 octane premium gas!", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
1GR–FE engine—Select Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or
higher. For improved vehicle performance, the use of premium unleaded
gasoline with an Octane Rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher
is recommended.
Does the manual imply premium fuel improves advertised HP/TQ (245/282)?
the weridest part is in my book, it says for d cabs and the x runner use premium. the rest use regular. from a tech high up at trd my father was talking to about his sc, said that the reported over 10 hp dfference between the two grades. if my manual says 91, thats what it is. i didnt buy an x runner to cheap out of a quick 10 hp!

I am hearing from owners of '05 4x4 V6 Automatic Tacomas that the MPG that they are achieving is not anywhere near the 17 City, 21 Highway that they are rated for. What kind of mileage is everyone getting with your '05 4x4 Automatic V6's???
1st tank for 4x4 DC Sport on 87 octane was 17.8mpg. Included a 120 mile interstate trip, and 15 mile commutes to and from work with light stop and go. Got 314 miles out of that tank, and it took 17.6 gallons to fill it sitting right on E.
How do you like the truck so far? Do you find that the hood scoop is sticking up a little to much in your view? Other than that, I would have got the Sport package - love the color keyed and 17" rims. Have you had any problems with shimmying at highway speeds? And do you know the last 5 digits of your VIN? I am trying to see if it was just the early models that were having those problems.
I've got 2500 miles on my DC short bed 4x4 V-6 auto TRD offroad. Been getting right about 20mpg with 75% highway (up and down I-93). Always 87 octane.
Love it so far. No noises or problems other than the slight engine ticking on acceleration. It handled the icy mess last night quite nicely. I got to exercise 4H on the ice covered hill up to my house Jammed on the brakes and verified the operation of anti-lock too.
Good to hear that you are having good luck with your new Tacoma. Just out of curiosity, what are the last 5 digits of your VIN? Just wondering how early of a model you have.

in 600 miles to seattle and back I got 13.8-16.1mpg. Don't know if there is a problem or whats wrong, I only ran it up to 111mph once. That sucks!!! not happy.
I went to vegas witch is 400 miles from my house. I had the cruise control the whole time at 85mph and got 22 mpg! I was useing 91 octane. On the street i get about 17 or 18 depending on how i drive.
hey everyone i'm new to this forums and have gotta 20 MPG on my double cab 4x4 each time i filled up so far. got about 360 miles a tank....not bad i like it i just reached 1200 miles got it a 2 weeks ago!
I have D-cab 4x4 and am getting on average about 19mpg (half city half fwy.). If I drive mostly fwy, I'll get 21-22mpg. And after the first two tanks I was getting better milage. I now have a total of 4300mi on the truck.

Sorry I didn't get back to these questions quicker. I think I answered some of this in the PM a day or two ago. I'm not fond of the hood scoop - it does indeed obstruct some of the view over the hood. I would have preferred not to have it, but I more preferred the sport suspension. I love the 17s - infact the 17's and their duellers match exactly the ones I put on my wife's 01 silver 4-runner. I bought them from a local junk yard - they were take0ffs from a brand new 4runner. still had the nubbies on the tread.
