TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tacoma Photos & Videos", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Looking at the "fender flares"... looks an "aweful" lot... like a Chevrolet Colorado or a GMC Canyon! Matter of fact... the whole thing... "kinda" looks like a Colorado or a Canyon!
There must be some pretty good drugs being handed out in these boards! Other than the similar squarish fenders (Which the 4Runner had long before the Colorado/Canyon, although I could be wrong) this Tacoma looks nothing like either of those vehicles. This thing looks much better! Plus it's a Toyota! Quality speaks for itself!
Well, I'm not on drugs and first thing I thought was Colorado and Canyon also. I think most of us on this board understand the difference between Toyota and the rest of them.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
Yea I agree, besides the wheel openings I do not see any real similiarities. The Taco looks much better, and I kinda like the Colorado look. Now...the interior pics I have seen is a different story (they both are unappealing).
Put the gx interior design and the tundra v8 and they will sell more than they can make and there would be one parked about 20 feet from this puter!
I can see the similarity too, but check out the fender flares on the Colorado/Canyon Z71's again. The tops of the flares almost touch the top of the bed and the top of the front fender. It looks like there must be about eight or nine inches between them on the Tacoma. The new Tacoma flares looks better to me, especially body colored.
There is something zbout those rear flares that bother me. In fact, I'm getting a little burned out with all of these massive flares that are on these trucks. The Frontier, the Colorado/Canyon, the 4-Runner, and now the Tacoma. Remember the flares on the old Nissan Hardbody trucks? What do ya'll think those would look like on the Tacoma as replacements? Just a thought. As for now, I love my 03' DC.
Any thoughts on "partnering" between GM and Toyota on design and development? The dealer mentioned something when I asked about the '05 Tacomas but would not eloborate?

If there was some sort of design partnership going on, I dont think this would be a bad thing. Unoriginal, yes....bad, no. But I think this plastic cladding thing is here to stay. I miss the ol' regular cab 4WD V-6 I grew up with in CO. Those were the days! I used to walk 2 miles in the snow just to get to.....
I read somewhere I can't remeber but in order to 'compete' with the big 3 (like toyota needs to) that Toyota was hiring engineers from Chevy and Dodge (oh please no not Dodge ) to design and "American Full Size Truck" maybe some of this design strategy has been brought to the Tacorado, or Tacomundra, or whatever you want to call the new Tacoma. I still have high hopes that it could be a sweet truck. That may be why the partnership rumor is out there.
There's no truth to that at all when it comes to trucks. Toyota and GM do have one car they do collaborate on (The Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix).
To me other than the shape of the fenders the 05 Taco looks nothing like the hideously ugly Canyon/Colorado.
