Question 2wd vs. 4wd for bad weather driving...

I live in the Boston area and have been sold on a 2005 crew cab long bed 4x4 before it left the concept studio. But now I'm starting to think maybe 2wd access cab might be a better option, something a little more x-runner ish.

Anyone on the cold/snowbelt have a 2wd Taco and run it in the winter?. (yes I realize no one specifically has an x-runner yet) but I'm wondering how nuts I'd have to be to consider one for driving year round (yes steelies and snow tires are already on the list before posing this question for winter driving).

And for all those that do think I'm nuts for asking, my 2k2 Tundra was in 4wd for about 4 minutes of its ~10k miles with me. I could put it though anything (ls rear) and never have to touch the 4wd button unless the front was actually stuck, which only happened intentionally .
That thing was confidence inspiring in any weather, but it was nice to know the button was there which helped alot I'm sure.

However I have zero other comparison vehicles or folks in the know I could ask, they either have 4wd, or fwd econo-boxes, so I turn to those of you in the snowier areas.

Thanks
-OC

I run my Mustang 5.0L, which is RWD here in PA. year round.
Like you said, snow tires are a must for RWD cars. Blizzak's rock!
I get around fine, a little slippin' and a slidin', but I get to work and back.
You have to know how to drive a RWD in the snow. Experience is key.
I assume you have all the skills already.
Do you really NEED 4wd for the wet and snow? No, but it doesn't hurt like you said.
So you have to determine if you need it, want it, and want to pay for it.
I am considering a 4x4 DC myself, and wondering if I need it, but I determined my next vehicle will be AWD, or 4X4, just because.

Hey thanks, thats what started this thread

No seriously - I appreciate the info Though might be because you have an LX 5.0 that I trust the judgement...a GT would be a different story altogether, but I know the LX actually has a bit less weight out back. Do you toss anything in there like sand etc. in the winter?

Driving 2wd/Rwd vehicles in crappy weather is an old skill for me, had a 94 aerostar for about 4 years as a work vehicle awhile back and no posi and a 4.0l v6 combined with HD tires meant lots of fun in the snow.

Blizzaks rock, the cheaper Dunlops are almost as good too I've found.
Thanks
