TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Gas Cap, is this dumb, I really don't know!", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
When I was getting gas today the attendant filled the truck while i went to the lavatory. When I returned, he asked me " someone steel your gas cap"!! I hadn't really ever noticed so I asked him what he was talking about.
He said my gas cap was an aftermarket cap! I didn't know that, so I called the dealer and he said I should be using a Toyota Cap, the aftermarket cap could cause problems! Is this BS, it sure sounds like it?

No it's not. You may get a CEL(check engine light) if your truck doesn't like it. Had a friend replace their cap with a lockable cap. After a day, the CEL came on and they replaced it with stock. Disconnected battery to reset ECU and reconnected. No more CEL.
damn, that sux. with the expensive gas prices these days, im afraid someone will siphon my gas. hey no joke, thats a quick/good $50.00! i want to put a digital locking cap on mine, but i forgot about the CEL issue.
hmmm, what to do?
imagine having a couple of 30 gal plastic tanks suitable for transporting gas, in the bed of your truck. 10' of rubber fuel hose and a small fuel pump good for at least 5 gal/per/min. thinkin what im thinkin? pull up next to another truck or suv w/o a gas cap lock and... help yourself. in a few minutes, all the free gas you want. crowded shopping mall parking lots at night would do.

Just be sure that excursion or yukon valdez you pull up to isn't a diesel
the CEL is caused by a lack of negative pressure in the fuel tank, the system likes to have a little bit of pull in it and most caps just offer free-flow (check valve) venting I beleive. I'd give it a shot - it should happen within a tank of gas or two if it occurs. Just reset ecu and return the cap if it doesent pan out.
Give Stant a call (http://www.stant.com/) to see if they make a locking gas cap for your vehicle. I have the 10509 model made for my 04 Tundra DC and haven't had any trouble.

One of the TS Sponsors here, AnythingToyota.com has many parts for sale direct - much cheaper than the dealership.
As for siphoning - pretty hard to do now days with the way the inlet tubes are made. I'm more worried about someone putting something INTO the tank actually!
I read in the paper locally, about some guy who put a few empty 55 gal. drums in the back of a van, drove into a closed gas station late at night, and proceeded to pump the gas out of an underground tank into the drums. The thief must have had a slow electric pump, so was real lucky the police came by and caught him, as he had fallen asleep while wating for the drums to fill (with the van still running). Several potential scenerios could have developed, including drowning in gasoline, then explosion /fire as the van overflowed with fuel!!!

I've had this locking gas cap on my 2005 Tacoma for the last year with no problems. Stant locking fuel cap model numbers are boxed 10509 or carded 11509.
Most of the newer Toyota gas caps are made by Stant, and do not say Toyota anywhere on them.Don't worry about it.

I switched to this fuel cap and have had no CEL lights come on either.
