First I think the earlier Tacoma was and still is a great truck. But I think the 05 has improved on many things also. Although not to the liking of some heavy offroad enthusists. If your a regular driver, I think you'll like the extra power, smoother drivetrain, updated interior, extra comfort in seats and ride. And not to mention the extra room and opening access doors on the x-cab. I love this 05 over my earlier Tacoma. If your a "heavy" offroader, unless you get a Rubicon, I can't see you not needing, or wanting to do some mods for offroading on any off the lot truck anyhow.

Something interesting to add to the premium -vs- regular grade gasoline debate: "We also noted that it didn't like running on regular fuel, and we're guessing that Toyota is squeezing so much power out of a 4.0-liter engine it needs the extra octane to reduce risk of detonation. If you plan on towing (the Tacoma is rated to tow 6,500 pounds), plan on running premium fuel only."
Cool.. thanks for the link.. there have been a lot of discussions here as well about the Frontier having more HP than the Tacoma.. finally a reviewer that puts it straight.

The Toyota's 4.0-liter, 245-horsepower V6 may be 20 horses down on the Frontier, but with 400 fewer pounds to lug around the Tacoma proved the quicker truck. The big red Toy ran zero to 60 in 7.8 seconds, and the quickest quarter-mile (17.1) when loaded down with 1,000 pounds of sand. It was also fastest through the slalom at 58.9 mph.
And that's in a 4x4.

Nice write up. The Tacoma was faster 0-60, with and without the load, faster in the quarter mile and stopped quicker. Also, was smoother and quieter. I knew there were a lot of reasons that I opted for the Taco over the Frontier! Check out the picture of the "Nissan Tacoma" radio in the stereo review section!!!
On the fuel requirements, I have been alternating 89 & 93 octane & refilling when about half full, so as to keep the 91 octane. But 245 HP out of 4.0 liters isn't pushing that hard - my Honda Accord has 240 HP out of 3.0 liters and runs fine on 87 - but I'm not complaining, this truck is great. Just back from week end trip and its road manners are impeccable!! The sport seats are quite comfortable, too.

If the new Taco keeps getting all these rave reviews, I'm never gonna get one at invoice
I did! Well $100 over invoice that is. Give Doc Williams a call at Burt toyota in englewood, CO (denver area). He made it worth my while to buy my double cab 4x4 OG from him .......... and I live in socal!
Did you have any trouble getting it registered here in California? I've been told by DMV that vehicles had to have 7,500 miles before they could be registered in California, due to "emission reasons." They say that other states don't have the same emission requirements as we do. So once they reach 7,500 miles they conform to California emissions huh? Yeah right. Stupid state is just trying to keep people from buying new cars in other states and not getting the sales tax revenue.
Alright, now that I'm done with my rant, did you have any probs registering it here?
The new tacoma is 50state compliant for emissions, that means it is legal in CA.
The law is you cant buy a vehicle from out side of CA and register it unless it is used (over 7.5k miles), or it is built to meet CA emission regulations.
The only other way around this is if your vehicle is damaged while you are out of state, and you buy a new one to replace it.

Toyota's press releases dealing with its vehicle sales in January and February have been totally silent on Tacoma sales, while mentioning that Tundra and Highlander sales have increased. What has happened with Tacoma sales? I suspect they have been disappointing due to the quality glitches many of us have experienced and by Toyota's failure to deal with these problems. Great redesign, but poorly executed production and service will do it to you every time.

I thought it was the compression ratio that determined the octane rating of the fuel?
