TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Prerunner Vs. 4x4", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Sorry if this has been discussed before by my search results didn't provide an answer.
So far it seems to me that the only difference between the 4x4 and TRD Offroad Prerunner is the drivetrain and a couple thousand dollars? Everything else is the same, right? I'm trying to make up my mind on what I want on my '05. I had planned on getting a 4x4 for the stance, look, and overall performance of the suspension. But I'm now considering a pre-runner since I don't really need the 4x4 drivetrain.
Also, an FYI. I found a fully loaded 2005 dub. cab when searching my local dealers inventory online. It had leather, and the sticker was over $32,000!
for insurence..a prerunner is cheaper..me being an 18 yr old driver..that was a big factor in choosing my model..i want 4x4..but cost and insurence kept me away..
trust me..prerunner do PLENTY find offroad..if you go prerunner get TRD off-road..youll love it if you do a little trail running and whatnot
I bought my Tacoma new and though I wanted the 4x4 I didn't want to pay the extra thousands for it.
If I would have bought used, I would have gotten a 4x4.
I am however extremely happy with my prerunner though. Wednesday will be 1 whole year.
I think this is going to be a popular thread before it's all said & done! btw the difference (pre vs 4x4) is almost right at $3k.
Toyo hit it big when they invented the pre... and this is always the issue of those wanting 4x but on a budget. I am grappling with this issue now also, you might want to search for those discussing the difference between a locking diff. and limited slip (on TRD off-road vs TRD sport) too... good luck
I would LOVE to hear more comparisons between the Prerunner and 4x4. The only times I would ever use 4x4 are in the snow. I'm not an off-roader. We go to a ski resort in WV often in winter, and I'd like to know how the Prerunner does in snow. There are some pretty steep graveled hills up there. I would think with the locker in the rear that it would do pretty well, but I'd feel better hearing from someone who actually has one.
I'd be pretty unhappy to spend that kind of cash on the truck and wish I'd spent the extra $3k for the 4x4. Otherwise it'd be great to not have to spend it and not deal with the extra maintenance, weight, lower mileage, etc...
Well I guess this topic wasn't as popular as some of us had thought.
I think I've decided to go with a prerunner TRD offroad. I don't like the sport hoodscoop or rims, and I think the locker would be better overall for the little bit of offroading that I do. I still want some rugged capability, but I really don't have a need for 4x4 and it'll save me a few thousand bucks at least.

Leather interior? 32K?! I didn't know leather was offered as an option?Sticker=32K+. . . Ouch! Mine was somewhat loaded but without all the downhill decent control and stuff like that and I think I got a fail deal for being a new release.
