TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "05 6 speed manual tacoma", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I noticed that the first gear is very noisy in the 05 compared to my 01 wich has no noise at all. Also i blame the drive by wire on the engine reving problem while making agressive gear changes. It seems as though i could outdrive the computer's ability to keep up with my inputs. As far as the first gear ratio,i compared my 01 at 3k rpm's in first gear and it seems to be the same mph as the 05.Also the clutch action is way more lazy on the way up compared to my 01 wich i noticed only on agressive gear changes.I t almost feels as though there is some sort of hydraulic shock connected to it to prevevnt violent clutch engagement.(ie popping the clutch)
I hated the clutch, which is a shame becuase I prefer a manual.
Every time I went to push the clutch in, my heel would drag on the floor. I had to point my foot forward to keep it from dragging, and it really frustrated me. It was very uncomfortable.
I dont know what everyone says about this 6speed. I get into reverse just fine. It shifts very smooth for me. I use 2nd to pull out with all the time and it does it with ease using very little gas even on grades. I dont think 1st is short at all. I dont know what everyone else is use to driving..I plan on putting 3.56 gears in my Xrunner when they are avaliable. I was thinking about the sport model 3.73 but thats to much. Try driving my 2000 Taco reg cab 4x4 5speed with its 4.30 gears and 32's. now THOSE gears went by fast as hell. I think the 1st in my Xrunner is longer then my old taco 1st

I agree that I don't undertand everyone's complaints about the 6spd. I think it is just different than most are used to driving, so they complain.
Yes, the Clutch is soft, but that just takes a minor adjustment to what you are used to to get over that...and it makes laborious traffic driving easier on your leg anyway.
As for the actual action of the gearbox...I have not complaints. It is as smooth as I would expect out of a truck. This is no Acura RSX...and I never expected it to be.
The 1st gear is very short, but this is exactly what I'm looking for from a TRUCK. To me, this is beneficial for offroading and for towing...two things I bought this truck for.
man you think this clutch is soft. My old taco clutch..You barely have to step on it and it goes in. It is soo funny feeling when i switch back and fourth from driving each truck. I get all confused on everything...LOL but i think the previous gen tacos had softer clutch. atleast my 2.7 did

I test drove both the 4cyl 5spd and the 6cyl 6 spd. I liked both but could unfortunatly only afford the 4cyl. Which I'm very happy with. I thought both shifted great and ran great. Then i got into my fiance's new accord and what a 5 speed that is behind the little 4cyl. Talk about a snick snick short throw shifter right from the factory.

I was told by the dealer that this 'revving' issue is by design. The computer keeps the revs up to burn excess gas, helps pass emissions. You will also notice it when you stop andput in the clutch it will stay at ~2k for a couple of seconds before dropping to idle.
I for one think it is annoying and makes it sound like you are unable to drive a stick. Hopefully an aftermarket chip will fix this.
