TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Hitch Question ('02 Tacoma)", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I'm looking for a hitch for my '02 Tacoma. I was looking at a Draw Tite or a Hidden Hitch. Does anybody know if one is better than the other? I'm going to be installing it myself, so anybody out there who knows any tricks let me know.
Also, has anybody used those T-1 connectors that Draw Tite sells? I really don't want to have to cut any wires.
I added a Class III/IV hitch & harness to my old 95 Toyota 4WD pickup. The harness I bought at Walmart, plugged right into the factory wiring after taking out the rear tail lights without any cutting whatsoever. The hitch I bought off JC Whitney, I think it was hidden hitch. Easy bolt on to the frame, took less than an hour. The whole setup cost around $120. I think the Tacoma would be the same.
Go with the Hidden Hitch. Besides Wal Mart, any good auto parts store sells connectors that are easy to install. Or you can by both from JC Whitney. Total installation time is ~1hour.
Draw-tite, Hidden Hitch, Reese, PullRight are all the same company...Cequent division of TriMas Corp. Also in that company are Bulldog, Tekonsha, Wesbar, and Fulton. They make products for NAPA and U-Haul. Buy where you get the best price and service.
The Draw-tite (et al) connectors work very well. No need to get higher priced connectors and adapters from the dealership.

I have a hidden hitch that I ordered from JCWhitney.
I'm not sure if it matters to you, but I noticed that the main bar on the hidden hitch is tucked up a little bit higher than the drawtite.
One note on my install...the stock bumber bolts were EXTREMELY tight.
I had to take it to a muffler shop and have the bolts heated until they finally broke loose.
