Default '05 double cab short bed guys

looking for a measurement front of bed to tip of folded down tailgate or simply the height of the tailgate. i am trying to figure out if my quad and dirt bike will fit without hanging off the tailgate end. bed length is listed as 60.3" and bed height as 18" can i assume that the tailgate is also 18" long?

I didn't put a tape on the height of the bed but I do know that the tailgate is the same height as the sides. If you need exact measurements, let me know and I'll run out tomorrow and get you the info...

The tailgate is actually a little shorter than the sides of the bed.

Just went out with a tape measure ( and it's cold outside ). The bed is 80" or 6'8" with the tail gate down. That's bed and tail gate combined length.

Yep, you are exactly correct. I checked it out this morning. The tailgate is about 1" shorter. Sorry about the misinformation!

Default long bed or short bed?

i can't decide which one i want, coming from a '97 dodge ram 2500 4x4 extended cab short bed, i want the double cab for its room, the double cab short bed would be more practical for parking etc due to the shorter overall length. its just the looks, something about the side view where the wheel well is almost to the back of the cab looks odd to me, strange that they didn't center the axle in the bed. the dc long bed looks more even, finished
the dc long bed is almost the same length as my truck even the interior specs are almost the same i have a tool box in the dodge so the usable bed space is the same as the empty toy shortbed
anyone else downsizing from a fullsize truck? any words of wisdom?

The Long bed is only $500 extra. I saw both in person and drove the long bed double cab. It still has a great turning radius. You can't haul anything in a short bed. If i had the short bed, when it came time to haul a couch or desk, i'd be kickin' myself for not getting the long bed.

IMO...long bed

Default I like the long bed

I looked at both Double cab short and long bed. I like the long bed because when i Go to haul something long it always hangs out and if i had a short bed it would reallly hang out way to far so for the $500 extra the long bed is more practical in my mind.

Haha... I Have the exact opposite predicament. I love the looks of the double cab short bed, but I ordered the long bed for practicality's sake and the fact that I have to haul my kart in the back of it, so the room is a must.

But I love the look of the short bed.

Default Long Bed

That is the reason why I changed my 04 doble cab for the 05 one. I need the extra space. The long bed has a better look since the deck matches the size of the cab (double cab).

I just sold my '94 Dodge Ram 1500 after putting 285,000 miles on it. I liked the long bed crew cab and would have purchased it but it is only available with the automatic transmission. The short bed version looks ok but I really needed the extra space back there. I ended up with an '05 access cab 4WD. I like it so far but have to admit that I sometimes miss the legroom that the Dodge offered.

I had the same question. This is my first truck (DC LB Prerunner) After going through all the pros and cons, the hauling space won over ease of parking and turning. The parking and turning I can learn and do something about. It's a pain to get in the garage (7" clearance in front and 7" in back) but I can live with that better than cussing myself out if I bought a SB when I am somewhere and the SB won't cut it.

The long bed looked really looooooong on the showroom floor but I knew I would regret the first time I did not have enough space to haul something. Now that I have it I thinks it looks perfect with the double cab (good proportions I feel). The parking and turning are much better than I had anticipated. All in all a very nice ride either way!

Short bed DC for this guy... wife and I both (no offense to any LB folks) like the looks of the shortie better. It looked just a tad too long for me. So far I have hauled a couch, a motorcycle, and tons of christmas goodies and I haven't regretted it a bit. Dropping the tailgate to get a little extra length isn't a huge issue at all for me... of course I sprung for the bed xtender though just in case.

Also, I have 1" in front and 1" behind when parked in my garage now... if I had gotten the LB, i'd be out of luck.
