got stuck in a rud and tried rock back and forth to get out and managed to rip the front left mud guard where the fender well and ends and the mud flap hangs. Thing riped like a piece of cardboard. DOH! !@#$
Not a big deal. . . but what I'm really confused about is how much the dealer charges for them. . . each!?! WTF!

If they were on the truck when you bought it, they're covered under warranty. It's an off-road truck so if the mud guards can't stand up to the mud, they're defective. Mud guards aren't supposed to rip off. Try to have them replaced under warranty.

It's not the mud that does it. If you're rocking back and forth or backing up the flap snags a rock or obtruction. It then contacts the tire and the tire is what rips it off as you reverse. Happened twice in the Mojave before I learned my lesson.

Thats exactly what happened. Whats sucks that that mud guards on the 4x4 (Off Road package I think) are brittle making them susceptible to tear or crack very easily. On the other hand the prerunners, the mud guards are flimsy and very flexible like the 01-04 Tacoma mud guards.
I still say it--have them replaced under warranty. If you have the TRD off-road package, then the truck was supposedly designed for off-road conditions. It shouldn't have mudguards on it that can't stand up to those conditions. Parts of the truck aren't supposed to rip or tear when you're doing what the truck was designed to do.
I just had my left front guard tear as well. Only thing I've gone through is snow. Don't even know when it happened. The dealer here wants $124 for it. I say warranty as well. I haven't pushed this but I expect my dealer to pick up the tab regardless.
Last year bought an 04 Sienna $30,000
This year the Tacoma $37,000
next month a Camry $25,000
If the dealer can't eat $124 retail, I'm not coming back. Interesting that there are two now, and both the left front. Kinda makes you go Hmmmm.

They are meant to rip off easily (at least they were this way on my '01 I haven't checked the '05 flaps yet). This is so you don't tear the bolts out of the body, or worse rip or bend the body. The mounting holes on the flaps have thin notches just above the holes, this allows the plastic to rip and the flap to come out without major damage.
Re: So I ripped my front left mud guard. . .(Tacoma)
Wow, just ripped of my right front flap while 4x4 accross Colorado (sound like a 3 car pile-up). funny thing is it stayed on over the really bad stuff and ripped off while on a flat smooth road at the top of the trail... hmmm
I do have slightly larger tires which might be why. so do any of you want to sell me your remaining good right front flap that you removed? I have a 2006 TRD double cab 4x4.

Mossy Toyota - $86.15
Toyota of San Diego - $97.88
Kearny Mesa Toyota - $104.36
No fookin way!
Don't waist your time replacing them, they'll just tear off easier. Had two fall off just from the weight of the mud on them. Certified Junk!
