TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "2005 tacoma gauge install.", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Looks good, but IMHO gauges at that position are truely pointless. If you check them as often as you should while driving, them being at that position is just plain dangerous.
There not that bad, a quick glance and you see them clear. I would like to have them at eye level eventually though.

Nice job on the afermarket install!!! What brand type did you use? They look like AutoMeter gauges.
They are. The pro or sport comp ones. I cant remember which. But they have the silver face and a red bulb(not the little condom they send with the bulbs) it glows orange like the rest of the lights.

have you got the sensors installed yet? if so where did you hook into the oil and trans to get accurate readings?
Well last night I was doing an oil change and I found the stock oil pressure sensor. On the 4.0 it is just to the left of the oil filter. I have the aux cooler on mine because of the TRD pkg but they should all be in the same spot on the 4.0. I went to home depot and got the materials and the hook up was easy. I will get a material list and pics soon.

One question? Sine the Toyota is 10MM threads, and you probably got NPT 1/8 fittings from Home Depot have you had any leaking around the factory sensor on your 1/8 T fitting?
I have a 10MM Male- 1/8NPT Female adapter to hook to the engine but can't find the reverse adapter to hook the factory sensor into the 1/8 T?
New to imports, can anyone with import experiacne point me to a good online store. Have done lots of GOOGLE with not much luck. Thought for sure someone would make all 10MM fittings and sending unit but couldn't even find anything on Auto-Meter website so guess I will have to use adapters.

No leaks, I also used some teflon tape around the threads. I took the sender for the oil pressure and the stock sensor to home chepo and fit everything to gether there before I left.

Did the exact same, but found that the 1/8NPT threads were slightly bigger than the stock sender threads so I didn't force it. Had to order 10MM - 1/8 NPT adapter online so going to install this weekend.
How have your trans temp reading been this summer?
Thanks for the great idea. I just did pretty much the same thing, even the same model gauges. Now can anyone tell me where/how to tie into a wire that will dim the gauges? I have mine hooked up to the light circuit coming off the AC controls so they do go on and off how I want, but could not find any wires that worked in conjuction with the dimmer wheel. Or is this not possible on the 05 Tacoma's?

I tried to hook mine up to the dimmer wires going to the factory radio, could not get them to function correctly. They would dim with the switch, but then my gauge lights would not dim correctly so I just hooked the gauge lights directly into my running lights. Thinkg the wires were the orange with black and the orange with wite stripes. I did not play with it to much, noticed it was affecting my real guage lights so I was affraid I was over loading the dimmer switch and just unhooked them before I blew the switch.
Works good but no dimming, not a problem for me as I never dim my lights really anyways.
But if you get them to work please let me know, would like to do this as well just so it can dim.
Toyota usually does many of their things differently then you are used to. Most vehicles put the dimmer on the positive side of the circuit.
Toyota puts theirs on the ground side. So, to get your gauge to dim correctly you must connect both of your light wires to the dimmer circuit. One that will pick up 12v when the lights are switched on, and the other to ground the light through the dimmer. That is the only way it is going to light up and dim with the control.
Any idea what color wire is ground through the dimmer? Also, is that color wire used for the same thing no matter where I find it in the truck? I tried jumping (with a bulb assy. from the gauges) all the combinations of pins on the A/C panel with no luck. I even jumped all of the wires coming off the dimmer wheel, still no luck. I've been an aircraft mechanic for 20+ years and still I've run out of ideas on how to make the gauges dim, short of their own rheostat. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you are speaking of tapping into the WHITE w/BLACK stripe wire at the rheostat, that will not work. The lights WILL NOT DIM as you will be bypassing the rheostat and going straight to ground and providing full voltage to the light. The light must ground through the rheostat.
