TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "2005 4 cylinder prerunner access cab (opinions)", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Just picked up an 05 Access Cab 4x4 with the SR5 package. If I could have afforded the 6 I would have got it. But I'm happy so far with my 4 cyl manual. Keep it int he right RPMs and it's fine. I'm still on my first tank of gas. 296 miles and I'm still a hair of a quarter of a tank. My 02 Durango R/T I traded in would have been empty 36 miles ago. Lovin my truck so far.
so far the first tank average ~19mpg :-(. Hope it gets better. So far so good. However, since in live in SoCal with all the hills, I think I should have went with the 6 banger. For folks who lives in flat area the Access cab pre-runner 4 banger should work just dandy.
Here's a question for all of you 4 cylinder owners. I just picked up my 4 cylinder 4x4 Tacoma, and I love it. My only concern is if I push on the gas more than about halfway, it almost sounds as if there's an exhaust leak somewhere. It's not super-loud, just loud enough to make me wonder. Does anyone else notice this?

My guess is that what you're hearing is the notorious injector tick. Many people on many forums have complained about this very issue, but mostly when describing the V6 model. While you should report it to your dealer, expect them to tell you that it's normal and harmless. It seems to be harmless.
injector tick is nowhere close to an exhaust leak. i dont have a 4 cylinder, but if you think you have an exhaust leak, though its highly doubtful, take it to the dealer, at the very least youll have some documentation should you have further problems in the future
I just assumed an injector tick would most likely be noticed at idle, but I could be wrong. I test drove the V6 and didn't notice the same sound as the one I'm hearing in the 4 cylinder. My guess is it's normal. Although it sounds like an exhaust leak, it isn't. I crawled under the truck to make sure. I don't hear it at all until I'm heavy on the gas, so I suppose it would make sense that it has to do with fuel delivery (injectors). Thanks for your input.
