TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "2005 4 cylinder prerunner access cab (opinions)", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
22000 included SR5 package and allow wheels and traction control and upgraded audio. had to order. will arrive in march. let you know when i drive it...
I thought more people would have replyed to this thread. I would think that the 4 cylinder would be a pretty sought after engine considering gas prices will never come down, and will probably be a 3 dollars a gallon in a year or two.
I am more interested in the 4 cylinder for better gas mileage. The V6 seems like a good engine, but the MPG reports that I have been reading seem to be almost the same as a V8.
I'm waiting for an 05 4 cylinder 4WD. The one I drove was great, felt a little less powerful than my 98 4Runner (164 hp vs. 185) but quite strong. Made highway speed in three shifts - first, second, fifth. Drives and handles great, smoother and more comfortable than the 4Runner.
A lot of people here seem to be complaining about tires - 245 hp in a light pickup and you're bound to spin the wheels in the snow. The key is tractability, and this the 4 cyl. has plenty of.
Mileage is also very important to me, not just for the cost of gas. It's something I believe in - treading lightly. I would have gotten the Prerunner (27 highway vs. 23) but 4WD is handy in New England.
Yeah ive got a 4cyl 05 Reg cab and its def not a slow vehicle, gas prices for me are averaging around 23-24 in horrible freeway traffic. I'd def go with the reg cab in comparisson to the ext cab 4cyl
This is a big 4 banger too. My last truck was a ford ranger with a 3.0 v6 with 150 hp. So pretty much you get the power of a small six with the gas savings of a 4 cylinder.
Crap my 4.0 taco gets better gas milege then the 3.0 did......that engine sucked!
I test drove an 05 axcess cab Automatic 2wd with a 4cyl. engine. Truck drove really nice and was very comfortable inside. I will be honest i thought it would of had a little more power. I'm probably use to the 4.0. in my 01 ranger. I liked it so much I ordered a new axcess cab prerunner V-6 with sport pkg.#2 I should have it before the end of febuary
I have a 4 cylinder 4 wheel drive regular cab 5 speed. I am very happy with it. It get good gas mileage, and gets up to highway speed with out any problems. I've had several 1000 pound loads in it and it pulls them with no problem. But I guess it depends on the level of performance that you want. Of coarse the V-6 will be much faster but you'll pay for it when you buy the truck, at the gas pump, and to your insurance company.
I have a 4 cyl 5 spd Ext cab 4x4, not a prerunner, but power has always been enough for me, and this engine won't quit no matter what. I pulled a full size chevy 4x4 truck out of a snow bank last weekend. I get as high as 24 mpg in the summer and low as 20 mpg in the winter in New England. But buy what you think is right for you, not what other people think is right for them.

I average about 20-21 mpg mixed driving. That's better than my old 3.4 liter, and better than some who had the old 4 banger. As far as V8's MPG what V8 are you comparing it to? I don't know too many V8's that get 20 mpg. I'm not dogging and respect your choice to conserve. If the new Taco was a hybrid I would still buy it. I just needed the extra power for towing. Good luck with whatever you purchase.
