TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Frontier vs. Tacoma (Round 2)", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I didn't explain myself as well as I should have. What I meant is, I've been to those threads, and haven't seen the amount of problems that people here are saying they have. Like someone says "the tacoma has alot of probs, I'm going with frontier" and someone else says "I've read about alot of problems that they have too". My ? was, where do they see these probs. I've been to all the sites you guys listed. Sorry, I was tired as hell when I posted, and I'm still tired, so maybe I'm just delerious
First off.. Very good write up. I just wanted to clarify a few points you made.

Some stereo options on the Tacomas have radio controls on the wheel. And I believe all with cruse have the controls on a lever attached to the wheel (not the column like the wiper and turn signals)

Again.. a stereo options and double cab have an 8" sub and enclosure behind the passenger rear seat. I don't think that access cab or reg cab have a sub as an option.

I've driven in the snow several times in my '05. I have to say it handles as well as my '01 in the snow. The stock tires have something to be desired, but over all the truck drives great in the snow (will be added some BFG ATs before next winter). I was able to drive through unplowed roads with about a foot of snow.
Again great write up, very informative and I'm sure will be helpful to all who are looking into a new truck.
The Frontier came out months after than the Tacoma. Therefore, those little problems of a redesigned model will be discovered later. Toyota has sold thousands of tacomas by now and alot of owners are not having any problems. My double cab long bed has run for 3450 miles and I have nothing to complain about. I saw the new frontiers at the LA AUTO show. They do not look as attractive as the tacomas.
That's a good point you made, and it is something I thought about as well. I'm looking at the frontier as far as value as well. I can get what I want for 2k cheaper than a taco. But, what keeps me going to back to a taco is it's repuation for quality. That's why it's so hard for me to decide what to buy. Another thing is, my car right now is on it's last leg, so I need something soon.
Get the Tacoma, you won't regret it. The 05 Frontier is a new model year as well, and like ALL new model years it will have it's problems as well.

My wife was thrilled when I finally decided on what kind of car/truck I was going to buy.
I was on my way to the Toyota dealer to put in my order for a Double Cab Tacoma 4x4.
On the way to the dealer I decided to stop by Nissan and check out the Frontier.
Instead of driving the Frontier I took an 04 Infiniti G35 Sedan out for a spin and fell in love.
I never went to Toyota, but did not guy the G35 either.
Now I cannot decide.
Both are in the same price range.
Can you guy help this tortured soul?
thanks.
Buy the G35 for your wife and the Tacoma for you. Then you can trade back and forth depending on mood
It's really a personal thing for you do decide. Personally, myself, I'll never own a car, it's a 4x4 pickup only for me. I have lots of toys and I consider myself "semi-handy" around the house so it's nice to have the ability to haul stuff when I need to ("semi-frequently"). Plus I live in Maine so 4x4 is very handy 6 months out of the year.
Well, I can believe you made it out of the dealership without buying it! (Salesmen have a saying, "If you can get them to drive it, they will buy it!")
I'm 43 and the only truck I owned was an OLD Ford F-250 my Dad gave me about 10 years ago. (My Dad lived in Maine so the entire bottom was rusted out which, after a year, affected the brakes so I took it in for a brake job and my mechanic said, "You need to sell this now....brakes can't be fixed without a complete redo on just about everything." So I sold it to a farmer and got another Ford, an Escort.)
Anyway, my Tacoma is the first new truck for us and my wife likes it almost as much as I do....which is saying a lot!!!!
I'd say you would have to decide what you want. If you're just going to use the truck to drive on the road and not haul anything I'd go with the infiniti. The G35 sedan is a really nice car with lots of power, but if I were you I would forget the truck and the sedan--screw practicality and get the G35 coupe.
