TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Frontier vs. Tacoma (Round 2)", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Go test drive the Tacoma and then go home and think it all over for a few days before making your decision.
I just got an 05 Double Cab 4x4 SRD Off Road and I'm in love with it.... I'd just about park it in the front yard so I could just sit and stare out the window at it - but my wife wouldn't appreciate that too much..
I'm in the same boat as mjsca and seemingly many others who are weighing the frontier vs taco. But I am actually leaning towards the frontier for the very same reason of value and just some other stuff that has been hashed and rehashed (don't want to list because my aim here is not to start an argument).
Yes Toyota has a reputation for reliability, but both of these trucks are first gen and the associated risks apply to both. Reputation for reliability is sometimes a bit subjective because for every mention of Toyota truck owners with 150,000+ miles, I have also read of Nissan hardbody owners with similiar mileage claims. Admittedly, it seems Titans have their problems (I was considering a Titan, but no more!!). While some Taco owners are reporting some consistent problems, I am willing to wait a bit more for Frontier owners to start filing their reports, as the Frontier was released later than the Tacos.
I know there are alot of Toyota brand loyalists out there, and I respect that. But I just want to make an informed buying decision, and so far the reported problems and price premium of the Taco are a factor to definitely consider. (yes, I know this is a taco enthusiast forum, and problem discussions are the norm on enthusiast sites).
I have been lurking for about a week. I was trying to decide whether or not the 05 Tacoma was the vehicle I wanted. It was not a choice of other brands, just the vehicle type.
I have ordered a DC 4wd TRD #2.
I was apprehensive at first seeing the posts on problems, but I sat back and looked at the big picture. What sounds like a lot of problems are only a "few".
The same guys are trashing the trucks on other boards, the pics are floating around of the bed incident and so on. If you look at the problem with the bed cracking you would have thought that they were cracking on a bunch of trucks. It was one truck, with talk of maybe two.
I have yet to see a poll started on the actual people that are having the water problem or the squeek problem. One thing to remember is that the internet and this website can cause a microscope of focus that may only be a small handful issue. ( I don't know, nor from what I have read does anyone else)
I know one thing - this isn't Toyota's first vehicle release and it won't be the last. I bought the Tacoma because I have owned Toyotas since my first vehicle and of all of the other car manufacturers I have owned vehicles by, none has ever stacked up to Honda or Toyota. When my money gets laid on the table it is going to buy more than the piece of iron sitting in the showroom!
The answer is the FX45 or FX35. It covers both angles except the bed part. That is the most awesome SUV going. I am a classic example of torn between sports cars and trucks. The biggest problem for me is my other hobbies require a truck...but I got sick and tired of my other Tacoma being a gutless sack of potatoes, so I bounce back and forth from one extreme to the other. I went from a 300ZX Twin Turbo to my 99 TRD Tacoma, then to a Subaru WRX STi, and now back into a Tacoma. Honestly, once you've had a truck, you will always want it back. The new Tacoma engine and 5 speed auto is what truly sold me. The rest is icing. The engine finally has some balls and the auto is sweet. This the first auto trans I've ever owned. It is truly nice. The truck is worth it. The small problems will get fixed. As for Nissan, great cars, great trucks, great quality. You won't go wrong there either. The new Tacoma has alot of refinements in it that give it more of a car like feel inside. Take one for a drive, you'll be impressed. They hold their value for a reason.
My wife was thrilled when I finally decided on what kind of car/truck I was going to buy.
I was on my way to the Toyota dealer to put in my order for a Double Cab Tacoma 4x4.
On the way to the dealer I decided to stop by Nissan and check out the Frontier.
Instead of driving the Frontier I took an 04 Infiniti G35 Sedan out for a spin and fell in love.
I never went to Toyota, but did not guy the G35 either.
Now I cannot decide.
Both are in the same price range.
Can you guy help this tortured soul?
thanks.
I know how you feel. I have a G35 sedan. It's a rocket and a blast to drive. It's also a big reason why I was seriously considering an '05 Frontier, but Nissan blew it by not offering a long bed with the crew cab. I wouldn't call my '05 Tacoma a rocket but it's quick off the line and feels fast on the road. Way quicker than my '03. I find the handling on the street excellent for a 4WD vehicle. One high point is it's passing acceleration in traffic. I always feel very comfortable when I need to get into traffic. Another notable thing about it's power is how easily the truck accelerates under normal stop and go driving. My '03 always felt as if I was pulling something or had a load in the bed during stop and go traffic. The '03 was still far better than the '04 Frontier that felt like I was dragging a mobile home behind it when I wasn't. In the end I think that Toyota struck a good balance between the weight of the truck and the engine's torque. When I'm in a leadfooting mood I'm not disappointed with it's power. Good Luck!
Dude.. was that a Hummer photo? OMG must have beat the crap out of it to do that kind of damage.
I doubt he beat it up......I saw one on a regular paved road last month clean as can be sittin halfway in the road with front passenger tire and spindle about 100 feet in front of it in the road!! TFF
I guess a little water and squeaks sound ok when you look at what other manufacturers are offering.
Unless you're after severe off-road capability, I'm finding it very hard to imagine how either of these trucks is going to compete with the Honda Ridgeline. Honda probably isn't going to build very many trucks this year though so they will be relatively hard to find and they won't be sold for less than MSRP. I know it will be a while before brand loyalists will even consider a truck from Honda but it's looking very appealing to me. I hoping to be able to see one in person in a week or so.

The thing about tacoma is that it can fit anyones needs, from the pool company that needs small trucks to haul around equipment, to the hardcore off-roader that needs a rig that can be trail ready without much effort even to the people on the street scene that need a truck that can pull 1g lateraly.
That nad the fact that ridgeline starts at 27,000 while some tacomas start at 14,000.
