TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone Thinking of Trading In Their 05?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Id be cautious on the Fronteir as its a new redesign for 05 also. I mean looking at the Titans first year that had many problems, just go to a titan forum and all you hear is bitching about minor problems that add up to alot of time spent in the shop, but still I would get either a Taco or Fronteir over anything else for a midsized truck, but no way in hell im parting with my 05 Tacoma. I get minor squeeks in the cab now, never had them before, but the combined engine noise, stereo, and or passengers always drown them out. For the water leak you may want to look for some threads here, some ppl had DIY fixes if your up to the task.
Thats why you never buy a truck in its first year of a new design. There's no way i would put up with what you've been going through. Trade it in and get a tundra.

im at 3k + and would never trade it in for a tundra. my dad owns a nice s/c tundra and hes trading it in for a tacoma......hmmm.......
No problems here and wouldnt trade it for anything right now. I've got a little over 5K miles and cant say there's much I'd change. I wish it had 4 wheel disc brakes but not an option. The only way this truck would get traded in is if I wanted to buy another like it in a couple of years. This is my first brand new vehicle and not a day goes by that I dont feel like the luckiest kid on the block(so to speak at age 31). Everything i've been looking for and a little more.

You take a gamble when you buy anything, first year or not. Last thing I would do is take a bath and risk buying another car with issues and then ALSO be farther upside down.
All of the cars I have owned have been first year models. 90 Miata, 90 LS400, 95 Millenia, 98 Frontier, 02 Altima, 05 Tacoma. All were great cars, very few (both nissans) had issues. Of those that did, all were very minor. Would I do it again? Absolutely. Was it worth it? Yes. Nothing is perfect, but it sure is fun!
Mine gets dirty when I drive it. Think it's time to trade it in. C'mon people, it's a car and things will break, not work, etc. All cars have problems and they can all usually be fixed. Stick it out and let Toyota fix it under warranty.
The thing is half 2 yr old 4runner and half new. I expect problems from other manufacturers, but not from Toyota. Quality is why I buy Toyotas in the first place.
I have an 89 model year still that I purchased new and did not have any problems; not even the head gasket issue (but was replaced). Nor any problems with a 99. I was/am considering a new Taco, but now I am skeptical. Not to mention they are going to be building them in that new plant in Mexico soon.
Toyota if you are listening....keep quality a priority or your competitive advantage will sink with your profits.
Hi.
I am thinking about selling my new 2005 Taco (Black, PreRunner, Access, TRD Sport, 6MT - 3000 miles) but only because I've got a new baby on the way - just found out - and the truck doesn't have the room we'll need. Can anybody say sport wagon? I'm heartbroken as I love my Taco and treat it as such. Perfect conditon and still has that new car smell. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Cheers.
Here's the thing. I see a lot of people getting upset over minor little problems, but no one is looking at the big picture. I'm assuming most people buy Toyota because of quality. When I think of quality I think of durability. Sure the new trucks may have some minor problems, but nothing that can't be fixed. You always here how the Toyota trucks of old where tough great trucks and they were, but I've never been in a old Toyota landcrusier or pickup that didn't have it's share of squeeks and rattles. What made those trucks great was their ability to last. You could beat on them and they would come back for more year in and year out. That quality is in the new trucks. How many people are having engine, tranny, frame problems? None!! Those are the things you need to look at when buying a truck. If you look at the new nissans(Titan so far) I've seen loads of posts about tranny problems, rear diffs blowing and so on!! The new 4runner and Tacoma, nothing!! The complaints seem limited to a few leaks, rattles, and a few other very minor problems. I would rather deal with a leak than a blown differential!! In 15 years when your watching TV you'll see some beat up Toyota truck traversing some desert in Africa, or the outback in Austraila and say wow those were great trucks. And those that hold onto their trucks will look back fondly and be glad they didn't listen to those that bitched about the minor things, because the alternative is a truck that may serve you for a few years but won't last the long haul. People get realistic, vehicals will have problems they all do, but the ones that last are the ones that will be remembered!!
Based on your posts, I think I'm going to keep the truck and just try to deal with getting all of these problems fixed. At a certain point, you don't care about losing a few thousand dollars--your happiness is more important. The thing is that I love the styling and handling of this truck, and at this point I don't want to take a chance on the Frontier. I've read alot of horror stories about Nissan in general, and I myself had my own little Nissan horror story back in the 80's. At this point, there just isn't any other truck out there I would consider, and that's what's keeping me in the Tacoma. If Honda made a real truck, that would be great, but I don't consider the Ridgeline a truck, and it's ugly as sin anyway. Maybe in two years, I'll trade it in for another Tacoma. By then, all of these new model problems should be solved.
The dealer is waiting on a TSB to fix the bolt rattle--nobody knows how to fix it yet. As for the defective paint, Toyota will not admit that it's a problem on this truck.
When a friend and I went looking at the Tacoma and Nissan, the 2005 Nissan's quality was NOT up to the Toyota's quality. Yes, the factory glass moon roof was excellent and rear cargo light was great thinking of the NISMO engineering group (Toyota TRD are you listening?) implemented these features into their final designs. However, the quality and styling was in question when the final decision was made to purchase the Toyota.
I would serious write a "formal complaint letter" to the CEO at Toyota and express your concerns. Toyota does not want their reputation ruined (that's all they need is bad press). The "pen is mighty than the sword"!
Good luck with your situation. Keep the posting informed of the outcome.

I work with a guy who had a 1995 Nissan Maxima....an awesome car that was top-notch quality.
Two years ago, he bought the 2003 Maxima and has had too many problems to name and he's very dissappointed in the lack of quality engineering in it.
I like the Nissan truck, too, but this event with him made me leary of buying a Nissan and my Dad has a new Tundra and loves it....no problems at all. (I was going to get a Tundra until the Tacoma's came out and it is exactly what I was looking for.)
I am not brand loyal when it comes to cars and neither is my family, but we have had quite a few Nissans along the way and we've never had any problems with them. Infact, we have two Maximas now.. and I have a 05 Frontier which I love to death.. I was hanging in there for the Tacoma but I didn't want to leave the region to get exactly the truck I wanted and my local dealers wanted to stick it to me for shipping costs. While I still like the Taco and think it's a great truck, I also like the Frontier and so far haven't had any problems save for a intake rattle that was fixed with the TSB. There are plenty of naysayers for every vehicle manufacturer, could be because they've had a bad experience, could be something they've heard and are just repeating because they don't know any better. But just because one vehicle at one time wasn't any good, don't count out the whole company. I had a 1980 Toyota pickup that was a piece of crap. I haven't ruled out Toyota because of that experience and neither should you. First year vehicles always have bugs.. and sometimes, 5th year vehicles have bugs too. It happens. But you also knew that when you bought it.. just like I did.
Keep taking your truck back to Toyota until the get the darn thing exactly the way you want it.. which is why you paid the amount you did, to get a brand new, perfectly working vehicle.
