TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone Thinking of Trading In Their 05?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Between the water leak, cab mount bolt rattle, bad paint, etc., is anyone at the point where they're considering trading the truck in? I may be at that point soon, even though it would mean a huge hit financially. I have the rattle and paint problems, among other more minor things like shuddering brakes, which the dealer tells me is normal, and a creaky headliner, and now I've noticed a musty smell coming from the driver's side carpet, and I'm afraid I may have the water leak too. It's all becoming too much to deal with.
If you were to trade it in, what would you get? The first thing I'd consider is the Frontier, even though I don't like the styling all that much, but I'm concerned about whatever new model problems might pop up on that truck too. I was looking at them today on the lot, and I was impressed with just how heavy the tailgate was, but I have to admit that once I lowered the tailgate, it didn't want to latch closed. I had to try six or seven times to get it to latch. Other than that, I don't know what else to consider.
I love the Tacoma, I really do. I had it for 6 perfect days before the problems started, and it was great! In terms of power, styling, performance, it's the perfect truck. But the problems are really taking their toll.
Go to another dealer, have the carpet/padding replaced under warranty, have the problem area's painted under warranty, and have the headliner rattle fixed under warranty.... Interior trim pieces are easy to fix and it seems the leak is also. As far as the paint, if Toyota is willing to pay for the fix, then have at it.... The body shop paint should be far superior that the job done at NUMMI... I guess the problem with the paint is the environmental regulations from what I hear.... Everything is suppose to be "earth" friendly.
I know spending time in the shop with a new vehicle is not the nicest thing, but once these minor things get worked out, you should be very happy for years to come..... Also, trading in your Tacoma on a different vehicle you will take a hit on the trade in, basically rolling in negative equity into another vehicle.
Good luck and let us know what you decide... I am considering buying a Tacoma, but am concerned with the same issues you have stated, but it seems Toyota is acknowledging the problems.

I am speaking from experience here, do not assume that the problems are solved on the assembly line. IMO Toyota has not made any official stand on the leaks and rattles, they seem to be handling it as first come first served only if you figure it out on your own.
Don't be in such a hurry to take a financial loss. No one likes having to deal with this with a brand new "dream" vehicle but sometimes these things happen.
If you cannot get a Toyota dealership to take care of the problems you may want to look into your rights under Pennsylvania's Lemon Law statute (Title 73 Chapter 28, Sections 1951-1963).
If you don't get satisfaction you can always trade it in for another model/manufacture later. But then you will have the satisfaction of saying I tried all I could be before I was forced to bail out and take a hit financially.
It's not the dealer. The dealer has been fine and is doing all it can, going above and beyond what's expected. It's just that I'm tired of all the problems, and I'm tired of always going in for warranty repair. I know the mechanic on a first name basis at this point, and that's not good. I just wanted to buy a new truck and not see the dealer again until my first oil change. Isn't that what every new car buyer wants and expects? I can understand one or two little bugs because it's a new model--I was the third person to buy a new Eclipse from this dealer back in '99, and it had some new model bugs to be worked out, but so far this Tacoma has been ridiculous. It's one problem on top of another. I thought at least I was spared the water leak problem, but now I think I have that too. I just don't know what to trade it in for because there's nothing else out there that I want.
I know the people who report that they have no problems with their trucks are going to think that I'm blowing things out of proportion. I wish them luck with their trucks, but for the rest of us, these are real problems and so far Toyota's response to them hasn't inspired much confidence. It's been months, and Toyota still hasn't come up with a fix for the cab mount bolt rattle, and has flat out denied any responsibilitiy for the sandblasted paint.
The Vibe is made in NUMMI and is the same paint/process as the rest of the Toyota's. There is a problem with the paint which Toyota is not stepping up and taking responsibility for, that is for sure... That is why I say see if the dealer will cover the paint under warranty. The paint from the body shop will be much better, that is for sure.....
As for the cab mount squeaks, there is a thread floating around here saying Toyota is aware of the problem and it is actually the bed?? But others still think it is the cab mounts.... Have they actually lifted up the entire cab, realigned the bolts/bushings and greased them and then set it back down and retorqued them? Might work???....
I do hope everything does get resolved.... Hang in there...

Hey Nick -
I would recommend you hang in there... especially if you are considering trading this truck for another first year model. If you really do like the truck then I would recommend against the financial hit. In 2003, I bought a Nissan Quest for my wife -- another first year model and that machine had some serious problems. However, after multiple TSBs and recalls... the van is perfect. I believe that Toyota will resolve the major problems and most good car manufacturers would. Good luck
when there is a TSB or a recall how would i know?? does the dealership send me something in the mail or something??
Owners are notified by letter about campaigns (recalls), by Toyota Motor Sales, but no notification is made regarding TSB's.

Well I've read a lot here on the forums as well and surely the problems seem numerous and "unsolvalble". I've still got mine on order though and will deal with things as they come (if they come at all). If I were in your position the financial hit wouldn't be worth it since none of the issues have been mechanical or safety related. More "quarks" as I call them all fixable under warrenty. With the amount you would get hit with in upsidedown equity trading it in you could do all the work yourself and still have your "ideal" truck. Not worth it to me. Until they start saying that the wheels are falling off (like some American SUV manufactures do ) The Tacoma line is still a tried and true line mechanically and reliability. I will consider my new Tacoma when it arrives to be a 10 year or more vehicle. Can't say that I would say the same for Nissan or any other brand.

Mine gets dirty when I drive it. Think it's time to trade it in. C'mon people, it's a car and things will break, not work, etc. All cars have problems and they can all usually be fixed. Stick it out and let Toyota fix it under warranty.
If history is any guide, you're not going to be better off with a new Nissan. Yes, it's driving you up the wall (for now...), but your most economically reasonable strategy is to bite the bullet and get everything fixed under warranty. ....And hope there aren't any more glitches....
