TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone install a tailgate on a Tacoma?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I looked at that myself- the Tacoma has no lock on the tailgate. Disappointing because the Tundra has one and is a must to keep the tailgate from getting stolen and keeping the stuff you haul around safe. (happens often here in the phoenix area)
I was worried about the gate being stolen and could not fine a lock for it around here.
So: I took a stainless Steel worm clamp and put it on the hinge, you cant see it and it would be difficult to remove. I installed it so a screwdriver could not be used to remove it, have to use a small Wrench and it would take more time than most thiefs want to take.
I did this on my other pickup and never had a problem and tailgate theft is a big problem around here.
Attaching a photo of the lower right tailgate hinge.

I did the same thing but mine has to be untightened from under the truck
with the tailgate up , Just put it on top facing backwards . Doesnt really matter how you do it , just gives you time to load your hollow points.

Why not just put the tailgate in the truck when your out shopping or at work
Great idea! I ordered a Snug Top lid which will have two locks on both rear corners. (I just called and it's not going to be ready for another 10 days...bummer!)
