I'm moving on the 2wd access cab 5sp. For Gulf States (includes TX) they all come with the SR5 pkg. #2. With a drop hitch the retail is $19,940. Several fleet managers have been willing to go $18,750, which is supposedly $300 over invoice plus holdback, etc. I don't know about the 4x4. Seems steep, but the 'build a Tacoma' section of Toyota's website shows the 4x4 to be $4k more retail. Thus the discount from a fleet manager might be a couple grand, probably less. Build the truck at the website and look at the details, it will tell you what's on it and so forth. I know the 2wd doesn't have those big trim pieces or overfenders or whatever they're called. The Prerunner's and TRD's have them as well as probably the 4x4.
well on the website when i went to build my own it did have 20xxx plus dest. so it came to 21500 allready w like a 2 or 3hundred dollar package which had the emissions and rear sliding window. so msrp with everything came to 21500. but i was wondering around howmuch i could get off at the dealer off msrp. also my dad bought a camry from a local dealer and they sent us 1000off coupon i guess i could use that!?! right?

The 4x4 4 cylinder is only available with a stick so you must be getting the 2WD. You'll get better performance and slightly higher mileage with the stick. What I can't figure out is why they put the 6 speed in the 6 cylinder when it is the smaller engine that would really benefit from it -
I'm looking for a '01 Tacoma Xtracab V6 4x4 TRD, but I can't decide between automatic and 5 speed, and can't find them around here to test drive (most are 60-200 miles from me). I can see the benefits of both, but would really like to hear feedback from those with experience with both automatic and 5 speed...

Thank you very much!

I have had 3 Tacoma's. 2 99's, and 1 2001. One was auto. I liked the 5 speeds better since they were quicker, and more fun to drive.
from personal experience, if you want to drive in the sand, auto is waaaaay quicker. Doesn't bog on the the shifts. Racing in the sand, my friend had the same truck but supercharged, smoked him every time
Thats because you are down shifting. In "D" you make use of all 5 gears, in "4" you only use the first 4 in "3" only the first 3. Get it! If your driving along say going 60 mph and shift from "D" to "4" you will shift the tranny from 5th to 4th because you have eliminated the top gear. You'll also notice your rpms will go up. I wouldn't manually shift an automatic though its not good for the tranny.
I have the 5 speed auto v6 also. When you shift to D you are in 5th gear or overdrive. slide to the left to 4th gear back to 3rd, 2nd then low or 1st gear. Use D for speeds maintained over 40 mph othewise use 4th gear for city driving under 40 mph. hope this helps.
