Thanks for the info AkronRoberts. Keep me updated about the clutch switch installation, and if you have the same problems as nightman did with the cruise wires.

bump. Has anyone else purchased one of these? For those that own the aftermarket cruise control, how has it held up over time?

I installed mine back in March. I think I might be the first to install this unit as when I ordered it the vendor had not yet received them from the manufacturer. Anyway It works perfectly. The 05 Tacoma already has the electronic cruise intergrated in the Engine Control MODULE(ECM or engine computer). All that is needed is the switch to signal the cruise function. This is acomplished by a resistive value signal from chasis ground imposed on the 1 wire to the ECM. The only glitch is the wire needed on the connector at the ECM is not there so I had to thread a small wire through the connector to make it work. although I have not heard from any other completed or successful installations on this forum.

I have a Rostra system installed on my 2003 Tundra and also my 2005 Cavalier. I had the same guy install both systems on my cars, he did a good job and even used a factory cruise switch (turn signal) on my Cavalier. It works. But not like a factory system. I kinda have to squeeze the button to get the cruise to kick in, not just press it. And the speed up/down buttons don't seem to work quite right. Like it will speed up or down, then ease back to the original speed.

On the tundra, the cruise cable is connected to the gas pedal. It actually pulls the pedal down to make it cruise, since its drive by wire. The Cavalier has the cruise connected to the throttle next to the gas pedal cable, like where a factory cruise would attach. I asked the installer to connect the computer to the tach wire in my cavalier, so that it will kick off if the engine revs to 4500 rpms. Basically if you hit the clutch and the cruise keeps pulling on the throttle, the engine revs and then the computer disengages.

Nightman, I just installed the cruise control on my 05 4cly Prerunner. I think I have the same problem that you described. If I shut the cruise control off before shutting off the truck the next time the truck is started the cruise works fine. But if I leave the cruise on and shut off the truck the on, off logic gets reversed. You have to press both switches to turn it on, but it doesn't work. This sounds like it's on all the time and doesn't get reset when the truck is turned off. The instructions said to use the Red Wire at pin 13 of 1K. Is this the one that's on all the time? If so, what "switched" wire did you use? Thanks!

hi AR:

I can see why you are frustrated. I looked at every package they had for the 05 & it makes no sense to not offer the convenience packge on the regular cab. Its a reason . I got an 01 instead. & I like the 01 style better. I did see that you can get an aftermarket cruise from Rostra Precision Controls, Inc. I found an article specifically about 05 tacoms cruise (lack of) in Toyota off road. com.

I USED ACCESSORY WHITE/GREEN (+) WIRE FROM IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS. Confirm this with a test lamp or volt meter before tapping onto this wire. Will have power with the ignition key turned to ACC or On position. No power in the lock or start position.
There are other choices but I found this the easiest choice for me as i also installed a remote car starter that also uses this wire.
Good luck

Hi Nightman,

I tapped into the big blue wire from the ignition switch. It's only on when the switch is in the run position - no acc, only ignition on. Since it's a main, I soldered in a tap and used an inline fuse holder/fuse. Works fine now. Thanks for your help!

Rostra Cruise Control 250-1779

Here are some more observations regarding the install of cruise control on the 05 Tacoma. (and thanks again to Nightman for his help) These steps refer to the steps in the instructions that came with the control.

Step 1: Mount the RF Switch Bracket – Carefully pry the wheel cover until you can slip the mounting bracket in. It’s tight, but once fitted it works.

Step 3: Engine Control Module – Tip, you can’t go wrong finding the right connector. Look carefully at figure 4 and look at the ECM connectors. They are all different and only one matches the picture.

Step 5: For Manual Transmission Tacoma Only – You have to remove the lower cover from the dash. This is the cover below the steering column. Then pull the fuse box and tip it forward (two nuts, three bolts). You can then reach the clutch pedal stop bolt. Tightening the lock nut is difficult but possible.

Step 8: Locate Power Wire – WRONG – don’t use the connection indicated (figure 11, 1K pin 13). This is incorrect and if you use this (always hot) power connection the cruise control won’t reset when the truck is restarted. Instead use the blue wire from the steering column (or some other power wire that is switched on with the ignition). If you use this big blue wire be sure to put an inline fuse holder and fuse in the line to the RF Harness. For big wires like this one I like to strip back some of the insulation and solder the wire from the fuse holder – better mechanical connection.

Nightman did the following:

Hope these tips help if you try to install the Rostra cruise control.

Just wanted to let anyone know who may be trying to install the Rostra Cruise Control on the Taco's, after many frustrating hours, I finally managed to get mine working.

It turns out that the instructions and the diagram were wrong about the ECM wire, at least in my case. The instructions indicate that pin 31 on the ECM connector has the brown/white wire. In my Tacoma, that wire is solid brown. However, in my case, pin 30 had a brown/white wire. I thought, what the heck, and hooked the cruise control to this wire. At last, I seen the cruise indicator light on my dash, but it still didn't quite work right. So I disconnected my battery once again and let it set fro a few minutes to reset everything. TaDa! I worked great after that!!

If anyone else is having problems, check the ECM connector closely and follow the advice from Nightman and mdbrjb.

BTW, I have the 2TR-FE (4 cylinder) engine

Talking Good news!

Some of you may be pissed that you spliced wires and paid $200 for that Rasta POS system. I found a way to make cruise control work for $109 and it's all OEM Toyota Parts.

This is what I posted over at ToyotaNation:

Alright! After waiting nearly 3 months, I finally ordered my parts and tried it out on my 4-cylinder to see if it would work, and it did! All the safety features work (clutch switch, brake switch) and the stalk works perfectly. The kicker is, if you are even somewhat electrically/mechanically inclined, this "mod" is cheaper than that crap aftermarket system that requires you to cut wires.

Here's what you'll need to order for this to work:

84632-08021 Cruise control switch (this is the stalk)
45186-0C020-B1 Steering wheel cover (order based on your steering wheel cover color)
88280-14030 Clutch switch (only needed if you have a manual transmission)
84633-04020 Cruise control wire (this is what connects the stalk to the steering wheel spinal)

I got all these parts online through Toyota of Dallas.

Here's the tools you'll need:

T-30 Hex driver
10mm socket (long)
3" extention
Socket wrench

And the disclaimer: I cannot be responsible for any damages that may occur because of your negligence. Please be careful and have someone qaulified to do this if you are unable or unwilling.

First thing is first, you need to disconnect the battery.

Then remove the side panels of the steering wheel with a screwdriver. Be careful because they scratch really easy. Put the tip to the screwdriver in closest to you. A writeup of the next couple steps can be found here. Special thanks to Hank6500 for the how to.

Then remove the screws that hold the airbag in place. They are the T-30 Hex screws. Remove the clips behind the airbag carfully with a screwdriver and remove the ground at the bottom of the airbag.

Here's what it should look like once you remove the airbag completely:

Now you need to remove the wire that was the ground on the airbag. It has a white connector into the steering spindal. Remove that and replace it with the new one you ordered. The connector that is attached to that wire will go into the cruise control stalk. Slide the stalk in like shown below and tighten the screws. It should fit right into position.

Once you get the stalk secure, put the wire into the stalk, and put all the wires connecting the airbag bag on. Then bolt the airbag back into place and snap your covers back on. Here's what the final product will look like:

If you have an automatic transmission, you are done. But if you have a manual, you'll need to install the clutch switch. I have very generic directions on how to access the area you'll need to get to.

You'll need to find this connector underneath. It'll be taped up, but it shouldn't be too difficult to get undone. This is the clutch switch wire.

The clutch switch will go in the circle seen below. It was a complete ***** to get in this area, but even with my large hands, I was still able to access it. Take note of the distance from the top of the plate to the bottom of the blank nut. You'll need to have the same distance when you put the clutch switch in its place.

You'll probably need to remove the lower dash panel to access the clutch switch (and beleive me, it's easier!). Here's how to remove the lower dash panel to get to that switch. Thanks to remelad from TTORA. Remove the 4 bolts that attach the fuse block. Then move it out of the way and you'll be able to see where the clutch switch is supposed to be.

It's hard to get a pic, but this is the best that I came up with.

Here's the bolt that will be taken out and replaced with the clutch switch. Make sure after you screw the clutch switch into place you connect the connector to the switch. Otherwise the cruise will not work (because it'll sense that the clutch is being pressed).

Enjoy your new OEM cruise control

EXCELLENT writeup! I did the same job on my 2005 V8 Tundra, since the regular cab V8's couldn't be ordered with cruise unless you also ordered power doors and locks, which I don't want. I paid a total of about $53 for the cruise switch and wire harness to connect inside the steering column.

This is much neater than an aftermarket installation.
