We have quite a bit of information and feed back from V6 owners on their gas mileage. Thanks to them for sharing but i was wondering if they are enough owners of 2.7L 4 cyl. out there that could tell us what mileage they get with their truck so we can get an idea of what the difference is in real life.
Please make sure you mention the type of driving you do and whether your truck is a 2WD,4WD,AUTO or MANUAL.
I have a 2005 regular cab 4x4 with the 2.7 (5 speed manual) and am getting 18 mpg with 95% city driving. I hope it will increase as the engine gets broken in.
I've got an 05 access cab 4cyl 5speed. I've have 2000miles on it and I'm averaging 20mpg. Thats during the winter months here with letting it warm up in the morning. I'd say i'm about 60% highway 40% city. My last tank average 20.72 I'm sure during the summer I will get close to 22mpg. Much better than my old 5.9 Durango R/T that averaged 12.5mpg.
I also have a Prerunner access cab w/ 4 cyl. and five speed. I'm averaging 19-20 mpg with 1500 miles on the clock. I'm also hoping it will improve a little with time and miles. At least it's getting a lot better mileage than the Titan that I traded in. I'm glad to be back in a Toyota after half of my ownership of the Titan was spent in the Nissan "service"? department.
I was hoping to see much better fuel comsumption figures from a 4 cyl.I guess it really looks like there isn't much difference between a 4 and a 6 cyl. as far as mileage goes.
I wonder if it is really worth the trade off.All this just makes it a little more difficult to decide which one to go with.
Thanks for the reply everybody.

I have to agree with you - with San Diego having some of the highest gas prices in the country and my having to commute quite a distance to work each day, I was having a tough time justifying going with the 6 cyl.
However, after reading this site and doing other research, there isn't a HUGE difference in the mileage on the 2 engines. I ended up going with the 6 cyl - my only problem is it is WAY too much fun to hit the throttle on that 6...so of late, I have only been getting 18 MPG - however, on a freeway drive up north, I got 20 with cruise control.

If you can afford the 6 go with the 6. I wouldn't buy it because of the gas difference. Like you said not enough of a difference. My last tank I got 21.9 with my 4 cyl. Which I'm still suspecting will get better. But if I could have afforded a 6 it would have been a no brainer. You can compare the two in terms of mashing the gas pedal.
2WD Access Cab Pre-runner Manual, also live in San Diego, been about 1500 miles average around 18-19MPG 60% city 40% freeway. I really regret not going for the 6. If anyone out there is thinking about the 4 and live in hilly areas, do not consider the 4, if you do you can buy mine for a discount so I can get the 6. Wished I had read these forums earlier. Peace.
Iam running 93 octane in my 4-banger and Mobil1 synthetic and getting 22-23 / 50/50 Highway/City driving, I wouldnt run anything less than 91 in anything. The higher the octane the cleaner your engine will stay, 85 octane would not be good for the Tacoma V6's, I run 93 in everything.
