2008 Access cab tacoma--TRD Off road package 4.0L v6, 6spd manual.

When I first wired it up I wired to the SMALL blue wire--that popped the 4x4 fuse. So I realized this and rewired it to the larger blue wire.

What happened next:

--Diff lock light indicating locked position in all 4x4 modes--locker locked (test drove it)
--ABS light is on in all 4x4 modes
--2hi-->4hi change works as normal
--4hi-->4lo does nothing--no beep no flash, nothing.
--RR diff lock button switches my relay no problem. (checked with mulitmeter)
--relay in 4wd computer also clicks as normal.

So I took out my relay and used butt-connectors to wire it back to stock--checked all connections with mulitmeter.

Conditions now:
--Diff lock light indicating locked position in all 4x4 modes--locker still locked
--ABS light is on in all 4x4 modes
--2hi-->4hi change works as normal
--4hi-->4lo does nothing--no beep no flash, nothing.
--RR diff lock button clicks the relay in the 4wd computer but nothing happens.

Any Ideas what I should try before I go to the dealership thursday? (bumper rusted after 1 1/2 months--getting a free new one)

I'm still driving it as I do not believe it will hurt anything to drive locked on the roads right now as they still have sand/salt on the roads from the winter--and who really needs ABS? lol

Please help!
After reading your post I can only suggest you remove the mod and install male/female spade connectors back to factory. Start the truck and test the 4wd again. Check the fuses too. Take the turns wide if possible on ashpalt if you're stuck locker engaged. Your axles and the 4wd hardware are binding when you turn on dry ground. Turn on peoples lawns instead. j/k.

I installed the locker mod recently too. On the few wires left off dangling from the 4WD ECU from the mod I crimped on spade connectors if my inatall was incorrect. I will post photos tomorrow. The mod works for me and I can hear the e-locker motor engage and disengage when I tap the OEM RR diff lock button on/off. However, with the engine running, in neutral (locker disengaged at this point) I select 2HI to 4HI, the green 4wd indicator lights up steady and I hit the locker to engage to on. I can hear the locker engage but there is no ABS lamp or diff lock lamp on. Same goes for 4low, no lamps, but the locker locks. Strange. I checked the rear end while 4HI engaged with rear wheels off the ground to be sure (engine running, in neutral). It was locked as is was suppose to be. I grounded the one wire under a 10mm bolt where I believe the 12v outlet ground is. I just drained the trannyand filled it throw the shifter hole. My center console is still apart. I am going tap the white/black stripe wire instead. I am wondering if I don't have a good ground.

After I do it sober, I'm going to install a hidden 12v toggle switch to keep my buds from playing w/ the locker and destroying the truck. So, do what I'm going to do, reread the instructions and build the mod from there. Good luck.

Happy Wheeling.

ok, good for you man! I was trying to figure out how to post pics other than off link them. Her was my problem. I ran a wire to this ground point. It confused the 4WD so ended up just tappin the White/BLK wite on the ECU.

It's does not have to be TRD, but you must have the optional electric rear locker. (which generally comes with the TRD offroad).

Hey everyone - great thread. I've used the locker mod in the past with my 07 Tacoma and it worked great. CommAttack, you're awesome for figuring it out...

I just have two questions -

First will this mod work with a manual transmission - the six speed? Does is work the same?

Second, has anyone tried the locker mod with the 09 Tacoma? I'm guessing it would work just the same, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the help!

Got a quick question for you guys... I just followed the direction perfectly and still can't get the locker mod to work. I followed the directions in the PDF and wired to my radio shack relay # 275-218 based on the directions on page 14 for this relay. My abs light does NOT come on, but my locker light does not come on either. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance for your help!!

I have been thinking about this mod for a while but i was messing around with the 4wd and if you go through the steps to lock the axle 2hi-4hi-4lo-locker then go from 4lo to 4hi to 2hi the locker will stay locked and you will be in 2hi granted you have to go through the all that but you can use the locker in 2hi with out a mod. I used it tonight in the snow and it works awesome i kind of like it over using 4hi. My chick roommate figured it out, i was kinda pissed but i was happy to to use the locker in 2hi
