Default Longbed or Shortbed

I am going to be buying a new truck in the near future and the list is pretty short -- the Tacoma is the only one on it.

I can't decide if I want the shortbed or longbed. I won't be hauling anything except some bicycles, my riding mower, and some gardening supplies every once in a while.

Would a shortbed with a bed-extender do?

Do any shortbed owners wish they had gotten the longbed, or vise versa?

I got a short bed with a bed extender and don't have any regrets (of course I haven't had it very long). It all depends on what you are going to do with this AWESOME truck!

LB is an extra $500 (invoice) more than the SB; bed extender is $189 (invoice...and what I paid for it).
I wanted the SB because the truck is big enough--I read once where DC, long bed takes up more real estate than a Suburban. I like the bed extender because it is also great at preventing stuff from sliding around when it is inside the bed and not extended...yet gives you flexibilty to have a little more room in the bed when needed.

For as infrequently as I need the longer bed, saving a little over $300, having a truck that was slightly easier to get into parking lots and tight spaces, and having the advantage of the bed extender was the right choice for me.

Also, if you plan on getting one off of a lot (vice ordering/preferencing), it will be easier to find a short bed...long beds are harder to find.

I also wondered about the manuverability of the longbed trucks, but I haven't test driven a longbed yet.

It seems like the bed extender would extend the length of the bed to about the same as the longbed's length. Does that seem about right?

The long bed looks really streched out for my taste. If you don't NEED the extra bed space, get the short bed. It is more manuverable.

I've been doing some thinking on this and it looks like with the bed extender in place on the shortbed it would be about 5 inches longer than the longbed.

The shortbed is 60.3" and the longbed 73.5" in length and both are 18" deep. If you lower the tailgate and the bed extender goes all the way to the end/top of the tailgate then it should add 18" to the bed length, making the shortbed 78.3".

I think the shortbed is for me then.

shortbed looks good with the DC...if you want the longbed then get a full size truck...the longbed just doesnt fit with the DC...it doesnt look even. im pretty sure the bikes will fit in there but not all of the things you mentioned together.

I've got a short bed but drove both... I think the SB looks better but the deciding factor for me was that the garage door kept hitting the bed of the demo I drove! I drove the LB quite a bit before getting the SB and I don't think the 12" or so difference makes a difference on manuverability. My bike fits in the bed fine (see picture below)

I like the long bed myself and that is the style of bed length I purchased with the double cab configuation. It suits me just fine and I can haul just about anything when the time comes. The motorcycle fits perfect without the tail gate down as well. Another point is to make sure it fits inside your garage if you intend to park it inside. Again, it just depends on what you are planning to use your Tacoma for. FYI - If you live in a city where tight parking space is an issue, than the long bed may be a challenge for some.

I planned for the future when I built my house by making the garage 23' from the back wall to the inside of the closed garage door. I could park a DC Tundra in there with four feet to spare if I wanted to.

I think the shortbed is what I'll get, and get it with a bed extender.

I do have a question about the bed. Is the inside surface of the bed smooth or does it have a texture to it? The cargo area of my Matrix is plastic and if I didn't have the cargo mat stuff would be sliding around all the time.

Textured, but things still slide around in it pretty good!
