TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Paint Chipping on All Models and Colors?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I've read a few threads about the paint chipping issue. Seems to be a pretty prevalent problem going on with the 2005 Tacos.
Is the paint chipping corresponding to certain truck models or colors only? Or is it a certain batch of trucks made with messed up paint or painting process?

Anyone see a pattern to the madness?
No pattern.... If you have mudflaps and get running boards installed you should be ok.

So you're saying the all are prone to the massive paint chips? I thought I read some guys don't have any chips, while others look like their truck was blasted with pea gravel out of a shotgun.
I wouldn't equate a few message board threads into being a prevelant problem. I'd say it's isolated at best. I just turned 1500 miles on my truck and have no paint chips, or any other problems, whatsoever.

I did not say all are prone.... I am just saying if you have mud flaps and have running boards, then the area is protected where some are reporting problems....
Remember, everyone has different driving habits and locations (example would be city roads, country roads, and gravel roads).
I have 10,500 miles and have 0 paint chips
Truck made in CA Jan 05...

All colors and models are affected, though white and silver seem to be holding up better than the others. Speedway blue and black are the worst. The damage mostly occurs when driving in snow over treated roads, so people who live where it doesn't snow probably don't have chips. People who live where it does snow and who've bought the truck since March or so could be in for some bad news come next winter. Running boards and mudflaps will protect some sections of the truck, to a degree, but they don't change the fact that the paint is still severely prone to flaking and chipping. For those who have the problem, each trip in the snow will put hundreds of new chips or flakes in the paint. Yes, it's true that all vehicles will get chips, especially when driven in snow-treated roads, but what's happening to the Tacoma is ridiculous. No other vehicle driven in the same exact road conditions for 10 years will look as bad as the Tacoma will in only a few weeks. You can't blame that on road debris or environmental damage.
Looks like the tube nerf bars might help out some. Those look better than the running boards IMO.
I agree that the nerfs are helping with this truck.
Seems most of the people that posted in this thread have the Silver which doesn't seem to be much of a problem. UNLESS they are not noticing them but looking upclose. Hopefully it is that they are not having problems.
Black & Blue seem to be the most problemsome.
My truck seen snow at 200 miles and that was the only time it was in snow since Feb when I got it. I have a little over 5000 miles on my Black Sand Pearl on all hard roads and it is 'sandblasted' on the rockers, doors and bed along with hood and roof.
There is a petition started so if you notice any chipping at all, please sign the petition so we can see how many people actually are having problems. The forums have too many multiple posts to keep track.
