TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "2005 Paint Chipping? Sign The Petition Please!!", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
We need to try to get a more accurate count and description of trucks with paint chipping problems. There are too many mulitple posts to keep track of who has what problems.
If you or somebody you know has paint chipping problems, please check out this link.
There is no way to properly repair the paint chipping problem on these trucks without completely stripping the truck down and start from scratch. Not something we should have to deal with in a brand new truck!!

I went to a the attorneys at www.lemonlaw.com. They looked it over and said that is definately Toyota defects. They told me to allow the dealer the chance to correct it. He said more then likely, they will mess it up then there is even more ammo against Toyota. He said just by having paint work done on a new vehicle, it will go from excellent to good condition in Kelly Blue Book. Thats more ammo.
I called the local dealer that said they would paint it as long as I put running boards on it. The attorney said tell them it is their responsibility and if they want running boards on it, they can supply them. Of course, the attorney knows I don't want running boards on my truck!!! DUH!!! lol The dealer said no go as the paint work is contingent on me purchasing running boards. I said fine, I'll let the attorneys deal with it and he got lippy and hung up.
I decided to call the dealer where I purchased the truck to give them the opportunity to correct the problem. I ran it to them and my salesman and the general sales manager both agreed that the chips are excessive. I went to the body shop and showed them. The estimator was like "I was gonna tell you rock chips will happen on trucks...but then I looked at your truck and realized we're not dealing with 10 or 15 chips..we're dealing with 6000 chips." As my truck was there at the Toyota Collision Center, there was a new Dakota sitting there, quadcab, black, etc. Looked almost like a brother to my Taco. That truck had NO mudflaps, more mileage, and more aggressive tires on it and there was NOT ONE CHIP ANYWHERE!!! That right there convinced the estimator there is a problem.
So I should know Monday if Toyota itself is going to warranty the paint or if the dealer is going to bite the bullet and paint it. I also told him about the procedures for painting the flares as he wasn't aware of the TSB. He asked if I want them glossy like the truck or dull and crappy looking like factory. I said well if you want to paint all FOUR of the flares glossy, go ahead. If not, the rear flares better be duller like they were.
So, I guess I'll find out what is going to come out of it soon. I'll keep everybody informed.
Oh yeah...if you have any signs of chipping, call Toyota customer service ASAP and get a case number. Call your dealer. Call your Attorney General and let them know what is going on. Call your news if you want to. Also check out www.lemonlaw.com . It is mostly for northeast states but they have links to help people in the rest of the country.

#1 - Internet petitions aren't worth the disk space they're stored on. They have no impact other than to provide some sense of satisfaction to those who have signed them.
#2 - The paint problem is not unique to Toyota, nor the Tacoma. It has been a problem for over 10 years. Blame the "greenies" for it in part... with the EPA forcing reformulations in paint technology, paint is simply not as durable as it should be on mass-produced vehicles.
Honda's paint is even worse, with clearcoat failures being very common on relatively new vehicles.
The other part is cost. Could Toyota shoot two or three coats of paint on? Sure. Would it be more durable? Sure. Would the price of your vehicle go up by $2000? Sure.

We are just trying to get an idea of people that have paint chipping issues, not backup in the Supreme Court!!
I have to disagree with you on the paint problems. This is my 4th Toyota since '98, 8th total....and the ONLY one to have paint issues. I see dozens of trucks a week at my auto repair shop and NONE of them have paint chipping problems like the 2005 Taco.
I agree that paint technology changes every few months because of regulations. Problem is that appearently in the first months of the '05 Taco production, something was awry with the painting process. Considering that the Taco beds are assembled and painted in Mexico and then sent to Cali to be mated to is matching truck, there was paint problems with both plants. I could see if a bed or a cab chipped and not the other or vice versa. Then we could pinpoint a problem to a plant. This is not the case. Seems since around March to April 05 production dates on the Tacos are having a lot better luck with their paint.

I think the real reason the more recently produced Tacos aren't having the paint chipping problem is that they haven't been driven in winter yet. I read alot of posts from people who claim they have no chipping, and it's either because their trucks are still brand new so they've never driven in winter, or they live in an area that doesn't see snow. I'm really concerned because our chipping happened in the first month we owned the truck, so our trucks were still brand new giving us access to lemon proceedings and, if we wanted it, Toyota's courtesy paint job. But what about the people whose trucks won't chip until next January, when they already have 12,000+ miles on their trucks? I doubt Toyota's going to offer a courtesy paint job on a truck with that many miles on it, and they might not have any other options because their truck has too many miles.
