Default Deciphering a VIN number

I was wondering if anyone explain the sections/digits of a VIN number and the corresponding information that section reveals, like production date, location etc, and/or where I can find a guide to deciphering those numbers.

Thanks alot

My Tacoma was manufactured in late May 2005, and it's VIN has sequential number 0944xx ... so has Toyota really made over 94 thousands Tacos in the 2005 model year?

My Tacoma is 0989XX . How did you find out when your manufactured date was?

If you look at the sticker on the door jam, it will tell you the month and year it was made.

Not sure exactly how to determine exactly what day of the month it was made, but my dealer ran my VIN in his system and it was shipped on 6/2/05 which means it was probably made a week (maybe less) before that.

Post VIN code basics

A standard VIN code has 17-digit alphanumeric after 1981.

Basically, first two digits are the manufacturer's country and brandname such as JT..... (J- Japan, T-Toyota)

U.S.A.(1or 4), Canada(2), Mexico(3), Japan(J), Korea(K), England(S), Germany(W), Italy(Z)

Audi(A), BMW(B), Buick(4), Cadillac(6), Chevrolet(1), Chrysler(C), Dodge(B), Ford(F), GM Canada(7), General Motors(G), Honda(H), Jaquar(A), Lincoln(L), Mercedes Benz(D), Mercury(M), Nissan(N), Oldsmobile(3), Pontiac(2or5), Plymouth(P), Saturn(8), Toyota(T), VW(V), Volvo(V).

The 4th letter shows the engine and transmission of a vehcle such as U for lexus V8 LS model

The 5th letter is for Car Line: a specific model line

The 6th number is Model Code.

The 9th number or letter, X shows a kind of VIN Check Digit like a parity bit in computer theory.
And the 10th letter(or number) means the year of the vehcle.
1988(J), 1989(K), 1990(L), 1991(M), 1992(N), 1993(P), 1994(R), 1995(S), 1996(T), 1997(V), 1998(W), 1999(X), 2000(Y), 2001(1), 2002(2), 2003(3)

The 11th is for Assembly plant

The rest of the number(12-17) is the serial number.

This is the international standard VIN code breakdown after 1981.
However, the sqeuence can be different except the first two digits.
Please take a look at your VIN code and figure it out.

Thanks.
