First, can someone substantiate the following? I had two dealers tell me that the engine in the Taco is ran at the factory with the spark plugs removed for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then the oil is flushed and new oil installed. This allows Toyota to kind of "break in" the engine and get all the manufacturing debris out ot the engine, and it also allows them a "health check" of the engine. Is this true?
If it is, then when should the first oil change be done? I've typically did the first oil change at 1000 or 1500 miles because of the new engine break in metals in the oil. I know the oil filter should catch most of that.
So maybe just the oil filter should be changed at 1000 or 1500 miles? ... or should the oil and filter be changed? Or should it be ran longer before the first oil change?
Also, has anyone planned or are you running full synthetic oil? Since the viscosity called out is 5W-30, I was thinking of switching to Mobil 1 or Amsoil around 5000 miles or so. If synthetic is good enough for my 400 HP Vette, it should be good enough for the Taco.
Never heard of that factory procedure...interesting if true.
I do the early oil change, but haven't done an oil analysis at that mileage, so I really don't have an answer for you.
Lots of folks running synthetic, and lots of debate about the need or not for a break in period. No concensus.
Ken

My book and my dealer both said first oil change at 5000 miles. Since I've been towing I'll probably change it a little earlier. Since the engines are manufactured in Japan before being shipped here I would imagine that they are checked and "cleaned" so factory "dirt" isn't really an issue now.

True ... but the engines aren't actually ran under their own power. So I would suspect that they are still susceptible to the normal wear-in of all the parts during actual operation under power.
I don't know if I'd run it to 5000 miles before the first oil change. IMO, an early oil change is cheap insurance ... or at least a new oil filter in case the filter gets over loaded with break-in particles.
Just came from the dealer this morning and asked about getting an oil change since my truck just hit 1500 miles. I was told to wait until it gets closer to 5000. I've gone to synthetic at close to 2000 in all my trucks without any problems. Change the filter if it makes you feel good. Plus that's easy as heck to do now.
Can someone tell me what Toyota part # the oil filter is (2005 V6). I thought I remember reading that the one you get from the parts counter is not the same as the one installed from the factory. I just want to make sure I'm getting the correct filter. The parts guy is new and I'm not sure he's up to speed yet. Thanks
I changed mine around 4500 miles and I now run synthetic. I just bought a case of filters I'll check the part number when I get home if no know gets to it first. Or you can check the TRDparts4U website. The filters are a good price there.

Its the same filter for the Tundra V8. YYZD3 I think.
I took my own oil and filter to the dealer for my first change at 1,200 miles. I use Castrol GTX 5W30. They were all for the oil change. Fresh clean oil can't be bad for a motor. I can get 6 quarts of oil at Walmart for $8. I change often and a lot.

The original filter is supposed to be different from the "production" filter.
The OE filter lacks a bypass valve.
You really, really do want a bypass valve

If you read through the link I gave above, you will see that there IS a bypass valve in the OE filter (p/n 90915-20004) from the factory.
Is that for real? ... I have never seen that much aluminum in any engine. I'm surprised it didn't get caught in the filter. Are you sure that stuff wasn't already in the drain pan?
