Default Sport Wheel Center Cap Answer

I posted last weekend about loosing the center cap from my TRD Sport OEM wheel. My dealer warranted all four pieces ($67 a piece!) and I picked them up yesterday. The problem with the original ones was obvious when we compared them to the new ones – the covers that came on my truck did not have the spring steel wire that tensions the clips into the wheel, which explains why they were so loose. The new ones fit nice and tight and should stay put. My truck was build in 03/05 and I suspect there are more Sport wheels out there with the same problem. My dealer was sending back the original ones to Toyota so that they would be aware of this problem.

Good deal they fixed you up. My Taco was a late May build and the center caps are super tight on the wheel. Guess Toyota must have changed those along the way ... or you got some messed up ones on your truck.

Agreed - getting feedback on this helped me to get this fixed, TS rocks!

This was not a design change SuperBusa - but just a screw up. Toyota is famous for using subcontractors to make a lot of the parts and even sub-assemblies for their vehicles, but having really good quality control over what they deliver. This is one instance where they forgot to install the wires, and Toyota did not catch it at the factory or the dealership.

I have a 2008 Tacoma with access cab. I have lost two wheel cap covers in a matter of months and another is loose. My dealer is willing to sell a single cap cover for $65. Is there a design problem with the cap covers? I really don't wnat to keep replacing them if they will just fall off again.

Note: My truck gets some off-road use but no rough handling.

There are plastic tabs molded into the caps that lock into slots in the wheel centers. My problem was that the metal spring wire that was supposed push these tabs into place were not present on my origional caps. Since I replaced them with caps having the spring wire, I have not lost one in four years and that is with moderate off-road use too. Check to see if wires are there on your caps - I can post before and after pictures if necessary.

The first picture is one of the replacement caps, with the tension wire, and the second attachment is one of my original caps without the wire. I have not had any of the ones with the wire fall off.
