    Default URGENT- starter won't stop

A week ago when I tried to turn the truck over, the starter would click like the battery was dead. The battery is a few months old so I tightened the cables and the problem solved.

Tonight, the truck started but the starter stayed on. With the key off and out of the ignition the starter stayed on. I disconnected the battery to kill it. I can now start the truck with the key out of the ignition by simply hooking up the battery, but the starter continues to try to turn over the running engine. The key resets to the "on" position rather than being stuck on "start".

Also, I haven't tried this until tonight but I'm curious. Can you shift the truck into neutral with the battery disconnected? I don't see why you shouldn't be able to. I cannot shift into neutral with the key on and my foot on the brake unless the battery is connected, so I can roll or drive the truck without destroying the starter.

    Thanks a lot.

it's the shift-lock solenoid. It needs power to disengage, and allow the shifter to be removed.

There should be a shift-lock override somewhere.

    Sounds like a short, somewhere.

I'm gonna guess that the starter solenoid is siezed. - Find the main ignition fuse(s) and pull them. That should stop the starter (hopefully), then you can put it in gear to move it. You could also just use the bypass for the park lock that should be right near the shifter.

    Good luck.

Hit the starter with a hammer.....honestly. That will jar the contacts loose!

Like he said tap the starter with a hammer, specifically the solenoid probably, as it sounds like it might be stuck.

Other things that come to mind are the starter relay in the fuse box under the hood, and/or the ignition switch may have gone bad.
