HOW TO:Light the 4X4 selector switch in '05 Tacoma
Okay, here it is. I was able to get the parts from the dealer to illuminate the switch. First off you'll need the 4x4 selector dial/switch from a current gen part-time 4WD 4Runner, part number: 84724-35020, $alot! It cost me $90.00 for the switch .. (I know I'm insane ). You will also need 2 "terminal repair" wires, part number: 82998-12420, about $5 each. You'll also need a soldering iron, or butt-connectors and some extra wire. Pull apart the 4Runner switch and take the diffuser and light bulb and place them in the tacoma switch. Then wire it up to to light from the HVAC. Put back together and you have a color matching orange and dimming 4x4 switch. For some more detail check out my site here:
My camera stopped working during the wiring to the HVAC controls. But just run some wire to the HVAC controls. Then there is a green and grey (I think, I'm color blind ) wires. They sit above and below each-other. They are next to the clip to remove the harness. And the harness is the one in the middle of the HVAC panel. Just splice those wires and you have power.

Fine work. I wish seeing that it is possible makes me feel better but sad to say it just makes me angry. How is it possible they did not illuminate this switch from the factory!! What a joke! $100 for a plastic diffuser and a bulb is ridiculous for a 30k truck. Fine work just the same!!
Can you get the switch from a junkyard to help defer the cost? Great mod though. Love it!

nice but no way im paying that much to tear apart a switch to junk the rest. Why cant we just drill 3 small holes in the back as push in some LED's or bulbs ?

Nice mod. I'm going to wait and find a wrecked 4Runner tho for that switch, no way I'm blowing $90 for the switch to get a .30 cent part. I will buy the patch wires from the dealer though.

Any chance you can tell me what the HVAC is? "Then wire it up to to light from the HVAC"
Acronym for "Heat, Vent, Air Conditioner" or something close to that. These are the closest and easiest panel lights to wire to. Just make sure to tap into both dimmer wires (Green and Green w/white? stripe). Otherwise you'll get no dimming of the lights. Using a common ground won't work in the dimmer circuit.

Thanks all... You got that right. I was kinda disappointed that they didn't include it as well. All of the provisions for the parts are there, they just didn't put them in . The only reason I can think they didn't put it in is case the steering wheel interferes with the view of the switch and if they save $2-3 per truck and 100,000 trucks, that's a good chunk of change, but they still should have put it in.

I'm sure you can, but I was not able to find one. If you go that route I think the v6 4Runners are the ones with the part-time 4wd.

I wanted the factory look and I agree it was a lot to pay, but I just wanted to do it the way it should have been done from the factory.

I was looking for one and waited for about 6 moths when I had the idea, but I just got impatient. I tried to get just the diffuser, but that's not available.
