This is a discussion thread titled "DIY: How To: Fog Light Modification", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
- Wire Strippers
- (3) Female Butt Connector
- Approximately 6 inches of wire (pretty much any gauge wire will work, doesn’t have to be anything crazy thick… 16-20 gauge is just fine)
STEPS #1-5
Find your light blue fog light relay, remove the relay and bend the top right pin from the relay to the side pointing outward, Attach a female butt connector to the bent relay pin. The other end of this wire will run to one side of a 5A fuse. Once you have your wire running from the relay to one end of the fuse, now run a wire from the other side of the fuse to the red 10A fuse that’s located directly to the right of the relays location.. Now you’ve completed this modification. Something you might note doing this modification this way, I’ve heard that in some cases if the fog light button is left on, your fog lights will sometime have a tendency to flicker on/off after 4-6 hours of sitting. The fog lights evidentially will come on for a minute or so then turn off repeating this process every 4-6 hours…
I Did this mod some time ago and it caused my check engine light to come on, do you know why it would do that? Has it happened to anyone else?
I Tried the modification using the fog light relay and the fuse. It worked, but it caused the check engine light to come on. Does anyone know why the check engine light would come on by doing this mod?
I wanted to easily be able to pass safety check. So I did it a bit differently.
So I installed a SPDT (Single pole double throw) Rocker switch ON/ON.
That basically means that it's a switch that allows me to select power sources. One way is constant power, and the other way is powered exactly as factory!
Any ways? I tried to do the wiring from the bottom of the fuse block but it was a birds nest under there! Too much trouble so I just did it the "getto" way. Best thing is that it is easily reversed back to stock. No one would ever know I did anything. (But I'll do it from underneath when I have more time.)
Here's the wiring:
Here's the rocker switch:
Everything works like the regular fog light mod! Just that with a flick of a switch it can work just like factory fogs!
Any chance of either sending them to me or altering how they're displayed?
I'm really interested in this mod.
Thanks
my apology.. the site where the fog light images were being hosted was taken down years ago. Having been unaware of this, I'll re-upload the pictures and re-insert them into this thread...

Great write up. I want to be able to have my foglights on with the high beams on, being that I tend to encounter alot of wild animals in the dark on the way to work.
One thing that I want to point out is that in situations where headlights are needed (darkness, hard rain, etc.), the foglights should never be used as a substitute for headlights. They aren't designed to be used that way, and with the headlights being higher up, they help other drivers to see your vehicle easier. The easier you are to see, the easier it is for someone to be able to avoid an accident with you.

Just an FYI for anyone that is interested in doing this with $10 and NO CUTTING OF WIRES. This is a much better way of doing it. It takes literally 3 minutes to do, and it is completely reversible with no signs that anything was ever modified. You don't cut ANYTHING! Here is all you need to do.
Your fog light mod is done. You will be able to turn on your foglights whenever the truck is set to "run" and they will turn off automatically when you turn off the truck. One side effect to this is that if you leave the fog light switch on, every 4 hours or so, your truck runs a quick diagnostic and because you tapped this specific fuse, the foglights will also come on for a minute or so. You can avoid this by simply turning off the fog light switch before you park your truck for the night.
No worries if it does happen though. Your battery won't die, etc.

So why are people doing this mod by tying into the EFI Fuse... seems like this is a problem waiting to happen. Instead of tying into the EFI I took the same wire from the relay and took it to the front corner marker. This way the fog lights can be used with only running lights or low beams or high beams. Also, by doing it this way the fog lights will automatically turn off when the ignition is off and the door is opened with no flashing 4 hrs later.
Let me know if I am missing something. Just seems like by doing this way it acts more like it was always suppose to operate this way. Also, very easily reversable.

Do you have pics for those of us who are technically challenged?

I will try to take some pics tonight and post. Took me a about 3 hrs (through hesitation) to do this mod when I was trying to do it how the prior posts were saying to do it... mostly because I didn't like the trigger leads they were using. I had my whole fuse box apart to try to do the mod from the underside. Once I thought about it more I put it all back together and did it the way I mentioned above and it took me a whole 10 minutes to do it and I wasn't tapping into any wiring that had anything do to with the computer or engine wiring. Plus it is completely reversable without anyone knowing it was done. I also didn't like bending the spade of the relay for fear of breaking it if I had to bend it back straight.
