Default Check Engine Light, Airbag Light, Trasmission, and Turn Signal Problem

Yeah, that's right, I have a veritable Wizard of Oz of problems. And they are all related... somehow.

When I say that I wasn't doing anything stupid, I really mean I wasn't doing anything stupid. I just noticed at first that the turn signals weren't working. The hazards were fine, but not the turn signals. Then I looked down and saw the check engine light and the airbag lights both on. I put it in park and decided to reset the maintence reminder thing just to be sure it wasn't that. When that didn't work I decided to just drive to the dealer. But alas, my tranny wouldn't shift out of park. I used the shift over-ride but on route to the dealer, I called and they said they didn't have any openings until tomorrow.

This has me very worried as my cash flow is very low right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Plus, it would be great to have some ideas going in because my Toyota dealership doesn't elicit a whole lot of confidence from me in the service department.

BTW, I reset the ECU and the check engine light went away but then came back later.

There was another member having this problem (the sifter not coming out of park that is). It was either the brake light fuse to the reverse light fuse. I'll try and find the post and edit my post with the link.

EDIT: here's the link

Blown brake light fuse locks out tranny shifter.

What can I say, but THANKS!

I don't know if the other guy had the dash lights come on like I did, but sure enough, the fuse for the backup lights was blown (ig1) under the dash.

The check engine light is still on, so I'm clearing the ECU right now. I'll post to see if it's all back to normal here in a few.

I think that is insane that the backup light fuse of all things can cause all those problems.

IG1 is a fuse that controls a lot of stuff. When I was tracing power to my TPMS ECU, I took that fuse out and noticed that all the lights on the dash were on. I didn't know that it also controlled the break lights.

Follow-up.

After a days worth of use, the problem seems to be fixed. Thanks for all help everyone. Please continue to discuss the absurdity of the electrical system though.

Well the forum helped me...

I was out in the woods hunting and backed into a limb that broke my rear tail light and the backup lights.

It must have pinched a wire, as my Aircon quit, my ALTERNATOR, and my turn signals...

PLUS it would not go into gear.

I called the dealer and they told me about the Transmission over-ride next to the shifter.

That got me home, but my battery almost ran down.

Once home I checKED EVERY fuse under the hood but no luck...

then I searched the internet and I found out about this extra fuse box and sure enough the IG1 fuse was blown.

Replacing that got me back in business...

now that is kind of STUPID that a single blown fuse can shutdown the aircona dn alternator...
