Jewdacris -- all speedo are off some from the factory. Only vehicle so far I've seen that is real close is the C5 Vettes ... probalby within 1 mph all the way up to 125+. Not too bad, but others can be 5% to 8% off -- usually read on the high side.
azfire06 -- at what speed or speeds did you verify the 1 mph delta at with the GPS? 1 mph isn't bad at all.
Mine was 4 mph off... While not completely scientific, I tested this using one of the giant radar displays that the Highway Patrol sets up around holidays. On one stretch of highway that I travel all the time, I would set my cruise control at 60mph and then would see what the reading was on the display. I made 5 different runs - 3 read 56, one read 57 and the other 55. I have since put larger Revos on (265/70/17) but only had the opportunity to test once - that test showed a reading of 61 mph. Obviously there is some variability to how good I am at setting the cruise control, but I figured it was close enough for me...

I checked at 70mph. The GPS unit is a Etrex legend I use for hiking. It was showing accurate to whin 18feet. The odometer was showing about 68/69 when the GPS was reading 70mph.

azfire06, thanks for the reply. The speedo being off one m.p.h. sounds about right.
Superbusa, I am sorry I cannot see speedo's being off five% to eight% from factory with factory wheel combo. That seems really high. If speedo's came from the Factory five% to eight% off, what would be the point of having a speedometer?
For some reason I cannot see GM being the only car company to make an accurate speedo on a new Vette.
For all the reports I have been reading on forums about bad speedo's, I am surprised so little feed back came up in this post.
Is toyota really off on the speedo's? or are the Toyota drivers way off on how they test the reading's on the speedos?
When I had stock tires my GPS showed the speedo to be fast by about 2-3%. Going 100 KM/h according to the GPS, my speedo read a just a hair over right between 100-105km/h. When I went up in tire size to 265/75 16's my speedo was dead on with the GPS.

I'm not saying the Taco has a 5% to 8% speedo error, but I have definitely seen other vehicles with this much error from the factory … mostly if you looked at this issue 5 or 10 years ago. I’m sure there are some today that are at least 5% off (usually reading higher than actual speed). Maybe manufactures are getting better at making more accurate speedos these days.
No, I'm sure the Vette isn't the only car with an accurate speedo ... it's just that I own one so I know it's accurate too.
My 2006 Taco Reg Cab 4x4 manual trans came with about a 9% speedo error. The speedo read 55 mph but the roadside radar unit and a GPS said 50.5 mph on several occassions. So I disconnected the battery (both positive and negative) for about an hour and reconnected it and the speedo dropped to 6% error (when the speedo reads 55 the GPS says 51.6 mph; again I checked it several times) which is what someone else said they got with basically the same truck. I saw a blurb in here about a gizmo you could plug in to your diagnostic receptical and it would give you digital speed among other things and marketed for about $163 as I recall but I can't find it now.
