TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "06 Tacoma clutch problem", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I am also still having the problem, but I doubt that Toyota will do anything about this after hearing that people with '02-'04 Taco's have the same problem and it was never fixed.
If this is the case, then this is my first and last Toyota. Very unfortunate, as I love the truck in every other aspect, but this is just plain unacceptable.
Towards the end of this year I am planning on using the Lemon Law to give it back if there is no fix by then.
Last weekend we went on a camping trip, towing our little camper (about 3,000 lbs). I had to get going on a hill, and it was just ridiculous. The rig was shaking so bad that I am surprised that the transmission did not fall out.
Yep, legendary Toyota quality. I have owned 8 brand new cars / trucks over the years (all stick shifts), have towed a 6,000lbs boat up the ramp all the time (with a stick shift Dodge Ram), but have never faced such a pathetic problem that was "unfixable".
i hear ya, i love everything else about the truck but sometimes it feels like its going to fall apart when it starts shaking when i release the clutch. Some days it feels fine and solid but about 40% of the time it shudders like crazy when i let it out. I wonder how many Manual 05+ tacoma drivers are having this issue, it really sucks that we spend this much for toyota quality and we get problems like this. It'd be one thing if the dealer acknowledged the problem and fixed it but all theyve told me is that its 'operating to factory specifications' or some bs like that. I'll keep bugging my dealer about it and hopefully somthing will come of it. Let me know how everything works out for you.
Michael, thanks for the reply. Yes, it does not matter if it is a V6 or a 4 cylinder, I have read tons of threads and messages, it seems to happen to all sticks, all the way back to 2002 models.
Today I drove by a Toyota dealership. I had some time, so I parked my truck a block away and walked in. Asked the salesperson if I could test drive a stick Tacoma. They had a 4-runner. It did the same thing. I pointed it out to the salesperson (who was with me). He seemed baffled, but noticed it, too. He told me that he will bring it to the managers attention. Yeah, right, good luck with that one ....
I kinda doubt that there are many stick Taco's out there that don't have this problem. Mine has improved after they disassembled the clutch, but the chatter is still unacceptable.
It is completely beyond me how Toyota can get away with this for years and years and years and do nothing. As I said before, this is my first and last Toyota if there is no fix by the end of this year. I will use the lemon law and get a Nissan probably. Maybe a Dodge RAM.
I have 2006 DC V6 tacoma with 6 speed transmission and I have absolutely no problems with my clutch. In fact, so far I think it is very good - absolutely no shaking whatsoever.
I have to consider myself lucky on this issue as well. I have a 06 Tacoma V6 6 speed and no clutch problems so far (6,000 miles). It has sat for a couple of days without being used a number of times and driven in heavy rain storms without issues. I also tow a boat at least weekly and haven't found a boat ramp that it doesn't pull out of smoothly. My driveway here in the hills of WV is a lot steeper than most boat ramps and I have no problem stating out on it.
I only post this to say that if the clutch problem happens on some Tacomas and not others than the issue is more likely a quality control issue with Toyota parts than a design defect. Either way they need to address it for those that experience it.
My '05 AC 6spd V6 and my friend's '05 DC 6spd V6 both do not exhibit this problem. Clutch feels and works fine at all times. I'm in a moderate climate but my buddy lives up in the snow. The shift lever jumps around a little bit when first taking off from a dead stop but I think this is due to the way soft bushings Toyota used to cut down on NVH.
About the only time Ive had a case of the shuddering is while in 4x4, and once I place it in 4 low it behaves, so I think its a matter of gearing in certain situations (sand mainly). On the road, I did notice a few times that while starting off it feels like the rear is slipping a little, just one light shudder, but I really think that was because I'm making a tight turn and the rear end lets go a bit. No traction warning..
It sounds like the problem could be caused by vibration from the drivetrain, rather than the clutch slipping since they have already replaced a good part of it.
Maybe try some different transmission fluid.

For those that have this problem has anyone had it fixed yet?
I have now experienced the severe shaking that some of you have. Before I only had a slight judder that occurred randomly and only a few times. Well today it started out as a slight judder and progressively got worse with each acceleration from a stop until it shook the entire truck. Of course the rest of the way home it didn't do it that severe. A couple of times is was slight and sometimes not at all.
Just want to know if anyone has had any luck with this before I take a 2 hour drive to the dealer to have them tell me that they can't find any problem.
I will add to this thread: 06 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Short bed 6 speed tranny. The truck sat for 3 days in a damp garage while it rained for the past week here in Pittsburgh PA. I drove the truck yesterday afternoon on a very hot, sunny and humid day.. I experienced the vibration issue and it was not comforting at the least. 4500 miles to date.. purchased Dec 31 2005.
05 AC TRD, 16,000 miles and never a shudder. If you dump the clutch at too low RPM's the engine diesels (spark knock) wich may be the cause of the jumpiness. Too high RPM's and you get wheel spin, find a happy medium, around 2000 R's and feather the pedal. I towed a 5 Ton Army truck for a few hundred meters and never slipped, plus I have driven like I stole it since day one. 90% of my miles are German autobahn, the rest are Alpine wheelin' and I am really suprised the clutch has lasted as long as it has. I usually only get 8,000 out of most factory clutches. I am still waiting on a ceramic clutch, and will upgrade as soon as they are available.
Has there been any progress in solving this issue on the clutch? I test drove a new manual trans Taco yesterday and am seriously considering a purchase although the last thing i want to deal w/ is a problem child. The truck i drove was flawless in its clutch operation, actually the smoothest clutch i've experienced. But this leads to a question, Is Toyota using a softer material in its clutch disc to gain smoothness on take up and material is glazing because of this slight slippage?? I've driven sticks all my life and the only clutch chatter i've seen were due to one of three causes....misadjusment, fluid contamination, or constant abuse due to slipping the clutch, causing hot spots on the pressure plate/flywheel & clutch disc.

Hello, I currently drive a 04 Tacoma and have the same issue with shudder. The idea of moisture causing the problem can't be true, I live in Phoenix AZ and how more dry can you get and my truck does it all of the time. I have talked to other Tacoma owners that live in the Valley of the sun and they have the same problem. HELP!
