This is a discussion thread titled "06 Tacoma clutch problem", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
mpaul, I'd leave the truck overnight (mine was also worse with a cold engine). Then, show up the next morning, and take a friend (who gave you the ride?) as whitness. Have them take the truck to an uphill slope, and tell them to start in second gear.
That most likely will amplify the problem. Of course, they'll have to slip the clutch a bit, but that should not cause it to chatter and vibrate like crazy. Watch the mechanics nose: I actually saw bookers flying out from the shake, LOL!!!!
Really, occasionally, my chatter was so bad that I thought the engine will drop out of that thing. Even my 4 year old would make a scared face and ask what the heck that was.
After the fix, there is nothing. Clutch works as smooth as it gets, and my dealer told me that this also fixed it on another truck. Get 'em to do it, be nice but persistant!
Good luck!
So what do i need to do to get this done. I seem to have the shake too. I want to sound like i know what i am talking about. What exactly did you say to them each time. Exactly howd the problem go
Can you tell me the name of the dealerships and service manager that repaired your truck. i have had no luck with either of the two dealerships i have been too. I am using your information and the bill as evidence about the problem.
Thankyou
john howerton
More than a week after the repair, I can report back that the chatter is definately fixed.
I finally got around to scan the service bill. Here is the relevant section: Comcast
I hope it works out for you guys!
One thing for sure: I am very happy with my dealers service dept.! It's the second time they removed the clutch, and they fixed it! At least they acknowledged the problem, and finally found a solution.
Good luck to all of you with the same problem! Get it fixed! It's like a different truck now!
I've been fighting with Toyota (Corporate and the dealership) for nearly two years on this related problem. However, in my situation I never experienced the chatter, but rather, hard shifting and occasional burnt clutch smell. This Tuesaday a corporate Toyota moderator is supposed to offer me an appointment for yet another vehicle inspection to forward the case. I'm quite leary to going through the motions of the hour trip to the dealer and burning the related ($4.00 per gallon) gas...just for them to say nothing is wrong.
I had the same clutch chatter early, but at 20000km i dont notice it much anymore. Weird, I talked to the dealers up here in Canada but they couldnt find a TSB for it therefore ignored it, and of course they could not re-produce the problem. I'm puulin a boat now so it better not happen on those occasions.....
There have been a few requests for that service bill scan (PM's). I'll try to get it up again sometime this week.
My clutch has been fixed, it works great. I can say for sure now after well over a year, and lots of towing.
Any chance of getting that service bill? I am having the same problem many described here and the dealership doesn't believe it is a warrantable problem. They told me the way I drive is causing hot spots on the clutch. I've driven two manual 4Runners over 200k each and only replaced each clutch once. The dealership wants $1,100 to replace it and dealing with them is becoming rather frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes, the 3 year 36k mile warranty applies no matter what: one owner or 12, it doesn't matter.
I bought my '06 with 19k on craigslist and it now has just over 30k. I was in the dealership last week to get a squeaky belt replaced and the leaf spring TSB done, all at no charge under warranty. I have the 6 speed, but no problems with the clutch so far (I'll keep my fingers crossed) Hope this helped.

Steve,
Do you think you could post the service bill once again??? Quite a few of us could use the "proof" in order to help convince dealers who are hesitant to fix the problem.
Any problems now with your truck? did you experience a chirp from trans during all the problems you experienced?
thanks, Motoretro
