I have an '06 TRD Sport, and while I would call it a little "shifty", I haven't felt any shutter in the tranny. I actually have had 3 different chevy blazers over the last 10 years, and this is by far a more solid feeling trans. I have howver noticed the surging when I am stopped. It is to the point that if I don't keep firm pressure on the brake, I could rear end someone. I'm curious if this is related to the other torque converter issue. Anyone else have the surge w/o the shudder??

Is your A/C on when this happens? The engine kicks up a few hundred RPM's when the compressor cycles on. This has happened to me, and the A/C is always on when it happens, never when it's off.

I've owned my '06 prerunner/TRDsport for a week now and while I don't have any shudder or vibrations, the computer sure seems to hunt for the correct gear quite often. I feel it upshifts too soon unless you give it more throttle than you should for normal accelerating from a light and when you let off the throttle, at times it will "hold it in gear" while trying to coast up to a stop light(this is with it D, not 4) GMs will instantly shift to OD or "neautral" when you let off the gas. Also, the shifts are so soft, its almost like it's slipping. In a former life, I was an ASE master tech& GM master tech and while I feel this truck is overall far superior to GMs weak offerings, I think toyota has a ways to go to match GMs flash programming for the drivetrain.
P.S. This really grinds on me about all newer cars-WTF happened to the trans dipstick? are we all too dumb to read it correctly? Do we all put the wrong stuff down the tube? Looking at the dipstick was how I used to gauge when to change the fluid- no more.
Yes, mine acts the same way. Another strange issue is that the transmission is too quick to downshift when going downhill. I agree, the transmission in my '05 Silverado was hands down better at always knowing what gear it should be in. My other vehicles have manual transmissions, so my Taco's automatic trans. really annoys me with its dumb shifts. The shudder feels a little like a worn clutch that 'chatters.' Not very severe on mine, but I do feel it occaisionally. I suspect that this transmissions' programming hurts gas mileage as it doesn't coast very well--have to keep my foot on the gas. I wrote a letter to Toyota today requesting a fix. If they fix the trans. and my weak rear suspension, I'll be very happy with this truck. It is otherwise very solid. A few minor issues remain, but nothing is perfect!
I just go thru putting in a new trans for a guy (toyo tech was on vacation--Dodge tech here. My boss owns both)). The complaint was when you put it in Drive, it would jump badddly. Nearly jarring your teeth aloose. A Toyota Rep. came by and was told us to put in a new transmission to avoid lemon law. The fault code was for a solenoid failure. If this helps anyone.
I just traded from the manual to a taco with auto tranny. I hate the way it shifts into first upon light accelleration. I thought toyota would have this figured out by now. I drove a Nissan Titan before and it shifted real smooth that you barely felt it.
When my transmission downshifts from 18 - 25 mph I have a annoying vibration throughout my truck. I took it into the dealership after I had my truck for a month and they service manager said he could not feel the vibration. Just got back from taking it in again and they said they could not feel the vibrations again and that a Toyota rep needs to ride in it. I don't know why the dealership can't feel the vibrations, but everyone else that has ridden in my truck can.
Anyone know if a TSB was issued on this issue? This transmission issue certainly is very annoying. Besides jarring shifts, shudders, the shift pattern (programming) is the worst I've experienced. Right now, if I had the option, I'd much rather have a manual transmission. I suspect that the transmission is contributing to less than optimal gas mileage. I wrote to Toyota on this, did not year anything back yet. Hope they do something...
Me too hope they do something soon. I just bought an 05 tuesday. I'd hate for it to be my first and last Toyo Truck. I absolutly love my truck, but I need Quality (why I chose Toyota in the first place), not to mention they have the awesome looking trucks!
This is my first Toyota I have owned. So far I just like the way it looks on the inside and outside, but am at the point that I do not like to drive it at all. Please Toyota help us out.
I getting out of my Tundra and Into a Tacoma and I am worried, how do you all feel that Toyota will address this tranny issue? Should I wait for the 07? Maybe it will get a newly revised tranny, I drove one on Wednesday and It felt good, but hunted for gears.... It seems like my tundra does the same thing. I dunno... My LIFTED tundra felt smoother than the new Taco IMO. Dang I am torn.
Well, if this is any help to anyone anticipating purchasing a new Tacoma, I test drove two last week (ended up buying one) and neither exhibited any of the symptoms reflected in this thread. Shifting was smooth and to me, absolutely normal. Both inside door tags stated that these vehicles came off the Fremont assembly line on 6/6/06.
This is one of the main reasons why I MUST have a manual transmission. I spent 2 months finding the right color/cab/interior/price with a manual transmission. The dealer(s) tried on multiple occasions to upgrade me to an auto. I told them I dont feel safe and I always have auto tran problems.... but it seemed like 9 out of 10 tacoma's on any given lot were auto's.
Is it just that people don't buy the man trans anymore or is it the opposite, where everyone is buying all the manual trans off the lot ???
