wow....just wow. Kind of makes me glad i only drive manuals.
the f16er's comment on using the truck lightly is disconcerting, if it's actually true, or could be true. I like to do alot of camping and hiking and that tends to put me on alot of forest roads and such. Certainly not considered wheeling by any means but it's much more "brutal" than going to the mall. Hope my junk doesn't fall apart. I have an 07, 5ps, regular cab 4x4
I just got my 07 double cab TRD Sport and haven't noticed the shudder or vibration yet. Truck has 7k miles miles on it, and I have put less than 1k on it thus far.
However, I did notice a thud sitting at a light recently. It reminded me of my 2000 Tundra that had the same kind of thud. With the Tundra it would occur shortly after you had rolled to a stop and sometimes seemed like the guy behind you had bumped you.
My 05 has had the shudder upon acceleration from a stop from Day One, but it doesn't have any vibrations at speed. And for that reason, I have never had an alignment. Considering all of the problems people are having with vibrations, I'm afraid that an alignment might cause vibrations.
your post on the "thud" is much like the problem I had on a 2003 tacoma. I was told it was the weak springs on the rear of the truck. When you decelerate quickly, the braking on the rear tires will cause the rear spring to "load up". After you stop, the spring will "unload" - hence the thump.
I noticed that with a load in the bed I never had the problem so that supports the theory. Just last week I was behind an older tacoma ( 2003ish) and saw the problem first hand.
I no longer have the truck but nice to verify the problem...
I too have the "thump" after stopping. I can't beleave its the rears springs. In my 2006 DC tacoma, when I stop everything is fine for a few maybe 10seconds, then the truck decides it wants to try and move ahead a little. If I don't keep the brakes on hard enough, it actually will. It feels like it gearing down after its stopped and wants to crawl ahead. Maybe torque converter? I don't know? Im not a mechanic. But it is annoying. I got extra leaf installed in the rear, and its the same now as before. Loaded and unloaded. Nothing changes it. So for that reason I don't beleave its the rear springs. Heck, sure even the motor rpm sounds different when it decides to crawl ahead.
I don't have the same confidence in this truck as I did with my previous toyota. And that was a 1993. But I never have much good to say about anything new untill it proves itself anyway. Ask me in 12 years.
Its nice to know that Toyota is looking into this issue and hopes to resolve it soon. I know that no automaker is perfect and people make mistakes, but lately it seems like Toyota is a little less perfect than they used to be.
IMO, that is unacceptable and how that Toyota is so much under the microscope with the other automakers ready to pounce and blow every little mistake Toyota makes way out of proportion, quality is more important than ever.

According to Toyota, Something’s wrong, you better bring it in for service and they can fix it. That way your truck performs as expected and has at least 1 of the above mentioned features (I.E. Noise & Vibration between 50-65 MPG, or Clunky Transmission... etc). Sounds like you’re missing out on all the perks of owning such a fantastic technologically advanced engineered $30 Thousand dollar plus piece of machinery.
“Oh Oh Oh Oh What a feeling…TOYOTA!”
I am also one that is missing out on all the perks. My 06 is running and driving just fine. In the two years I have only had to do regular maintanence (OF, air cleaners, etc). I had a Dodge 96 Ram that went through three transmissions, two manifold gaskets, starter, map sensor, within 50K. Comparing the two, the Tacoma is problem free.
Your humor is noted. Some owners are happy with the tacoma, some are not (like ones that buy repaired totaled trucks)

"I have had only one minor dash fit problem which was fixed under warrenty. No hassles by the dealer to do the work." "The more I drive the truck, the more I have gotten use to some of its quirks. Its still fun to drive." - Guess your's had some dash problems (quirks?), thought it was perfect? Just oil?
Yep. just the dash, now with 15K only had to do regular scheduled maintance (oil, air cleaners, etc). This is not the first nor last vehicle I have owned that was not 100% perfect from the day I purchased it. Heck even BMW, Porche, MBenz has some fit/finish issues at times. The quirks I refered to was the engine breaking done with the auto. It is more than the last pickup I had. And to be open, I think it upshifts from 1st to 2nd rather quickly when driving in parking lots. This is solved by locking it in 1st. I would have to say the tacoma is one the most trouble free new vehicle I have owned. I don't or have not experienced the "lerch", "ticks", weak rear springs others documented. (I have driving pickups Fords, Dodge, Toyota) for more than 30 years.
Point is, compared to other trucks I have owned I feel the tacoma is a very good truck in quality and performance. No need to be sarcarstic over minor issues. Most of the driving "quirks" I noticed during the test drive and felt I could live with.

I think a lot of the problem is that Toyota has a lot of new customers who for years had this perception that Toyotas are perfect vehicles that never break down and never have any flaws.
Toyotas are pretty darned good, but no vehicle will ever be perfect. In the end, you still have human beings assembling these things and mistakes will happen.
I still feel that Toyota puts a lot more care and attention to details in designing and building their products and does more to make things right when there is an issue.
I also feel that the vast majority of Toyota owners are perfectly happy with their vehicles (my thread that asked whether you would buy another Tacoma is evidence of that). It seems like people who have issues always post about it, but people who are happy dont post because they dont feel the need to whine and vent about their problems.
I could go on and on about the flaws on the '99 F-150 that I currently drive, but I dont.

TRANSMISSION, SHUTTER 1ST TO 2ND, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AT 13,700 MILES
I just bought a used 06 Tacoma with 13k, 4x4, ext. cab. auto, trd. I have noticed the transmission shutter. I have also noticed the clunk, after stopping at a light. I looked in my rear mirror once thinking someone had bumped me from behind. I have put about 700 miles on it since the purchase. The shutter in the transmission happens everytime 1st through 2nd. It feels almost like the transmission is slipping. I didn't think much of it and figured it must be normal until I read this thread. My check engine light went on today. I called my local dealer to set an appointment for tomorrow morning. I figured I would ask about the trans since this light had to be checked out. Searched google tonight and read this thread. I hope Toyota has a fix for this by now. The service tech said the engine light could be a simple problem or major... Really? Thanks.. Anyways it will be covered under warranty no matter what, i hope. I will post my results. It is amazing so many people have this same shuttering problem. There better be a fix by now. Other than the trans I love this truck so far. The trd package seats are much more comfortable than the bench or reg. bucket. I drove quite a few of the newer tacomas before deciding on this one but never noticed the shuttering in any or even this one on the test drives. Could of been to excited about finally getting one. They are expensive. Better be worth the money.
Local dealer says Toyota is aware of the shutter problem. The service manager called Toyota and they are supposed to be working on a solution. They said it is a problem with 06 Tacomas. They said they do not believe it is a faulty transmission and this problem has not left anyone stranded. They have logged in the complaint and the service tech agreed and noticed the problem while driving. They will provide me with documentation that they are aware of the problem and specifically with my truck and assured me that they will repair under warranty or out of warranty with 100+k miles or whatever. They said to call back in two months. Toyota is expecting to have a solution by then to repair this. Must say, this dealer at least appears to be trying their best to help get this straightened out.
Have they come out with any ways to fix the tranny shudder yet? just curious I got an 09 access cab, 4x4, auto and it does the same thing, shudder at low speed and steering wheel flutter at highway speed.
They haven't done anything to fix this problem from the factory yet,for those that are curious.
