^It's simply a trait of this transmission. You won't notice it, eventually. I don't and it only happens when I have the a/c on, which is pretty much all the time now.

I was then asked to come into the service area and school 2 of the techs on the air intake fix that causes a loud vibration when backing up on a cold start, that I had fixed on my truck.
What? ... you had to school a couple of their tech on an existing TSB for the intake noise issue?
My 2005 Tacoma (5-speed auto) doesn't seem to have any shutter that I can tell. It's very strange that only some experience it and others don't. You would think that if it was a design flaw that almost all Tacomas would show symptoms.
I wonder if the torque converter lockup though is related to certain driving conditions. I only have experienced the shudder when running my AC and stopping a little faster than normal. Feels like the truck wants to keep pushing forward. Turning off the AC though and I don't really notice it. Also I don't notice it when I've got my trailer attached. I wonder if their is something in the ECU (idle advance maybe with AC on) that is causing the converter to stay locked.
I think all Tacomas do the "surge" when the A/C compressor kicks on at idle. The ECU is trying to maintain a constant idle speed, and there is a slight surge in idle speed when the compressor first kicks on.
It has been over a month now. The shutter problem in the transmission is getting more noticeable. It happens everytime out of first, now second and can feel it before third. I am going to call my dealer tomorrow to find out if they have any more updates to fix this thing. I just turned 15k on my truck. I have been tracking the mileage and I am getting much better than I thought I would in this truck. Keep in mind I am in Florida. There are no hills. I drive the speed limit and do not gas the heck out of it when leaving a light. The last 3 times I have checked with an average of 19.5 mpg. Highway and around town. This is an 06 4x4 trd access cab automatic. Other than this irritating shutter the truck is awesome.
been trying to sell my truck because of this but when they feel the vibe just under 60 mph and I tell them toyota says it's fine I get the stink-eye then a polite, thanks but no.
contacted a lawyer regarding the lemon law

The shutter in the transmission happens everytime 1st through 2nd. It feels almost like the transmission is slipping. I didn't think much of it and figured it must be normal until I read this thread.
Interesting. Never had any problems like this with my '05 Taco, but I have the exact same problem from 2nd to 3rd with our '05 Highlander. Doesn't happen regularly so I couldn't duplicate it for the dealership. I posted the problem on the Highlander forum and there's one other person experiencing the same exact thing between 2nd and 3rd with his Highlander. Doesn't happen under hard acceleration...only when accelerating normally.
So, it sounds like this isn't only a Tacoma transmission issue.

I have dropped my tacoma off for the second time in 2 months. It only has 15k miles on it. The check engine light is on again and the shutter is getting worse. I told them the shudder is getting worse and they said as far as they know Toyota has not come up with how to fix this. I told them to call them again. This is B.S. If new ones and other used ones are not doing it then how can it be normal?
04asphalt, Have you contacted a lawyer and what have they said to do? Thanks for any help. Tdaddy
This is frustrating. I bought a tacoma and spent a hell of a lot more money for this truck because it was supposed to be soooooo reliable. Toyota needs to fix this before Tacoma starts to gain some really bad publicity.
Have you brought up the terms "Lemon Law" in their presence? My father in law had a problem with his transmission on an Exploder that they couldn't fix...even after replacing the transmission. Just mentioning his pursuing the lemon law did the trick for him. They offered to buy back his vehicle but since he was only keeping it for a while longer until he got a truck (was retiring), he opted for an extension of the factory warranty to 100K miles.
Personally, I would look up the requirements in Florida for the lemon law and begin the process. There's been plenty of posts here and on TN regarding the process. I believe you must start by filing an official complaint with Toyota Corporate (the required process is in the owner's manual or one of the booklets with it). Get that ball rolling. It might be enough to get them to just swap out the transmission with a new one. I think they're allowed something like 3 or 5 tries in a 15 month period (can't remember specifics but you get the gist of it) to fix a problem otherwise the vehicle is considered a lemon.

I started this thread due to the transmission shudder (see first post of this thread). But the vibration you feel from 60-70 seems to be common as well. I go down the road at these speeds, and my sun visors are flapping up and down, my feet are vibrating, legs shaking, and steering wheel vibrating like crazy. All I've gotten from the dealer is that they (Toyota) are looking into it.
I'm tired of getting smoke blown up my A$$. I strongly suspect the vibration is due to one or a combination of things; Bridgestone POS factory tires that will not balance, split drive shaft system, carrier bearing, incorrect pinion angle, or rear differential.
I've complained to my dealer 5 times about the problem, and they won't even take the truck in. They just keep saying that they want to wait for Toyota techs to look into the problem and issue a TSB with a fix. I discovered yesterday that the service manager has never entered a complaint into their database on my truck, even after 5 complaints. Guess he's after the "customer satisfaction" award. It's now time to call Toyota.
I feel your pain... After being told by two dealerships that the driveline vibration is normal, I took it to a driveline shop. The owner of the shop used to be Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's driveline racing mechanic, so he knows Toyotas. He started out shimming the axle (pinion angle), then shimming the carrier bearing, then replacing it, and then tried six different one-piece driveshaft setups... All had little to no effect on elimanating my vibration problem. I'm now back to the stock setup (and vibration), with only one option at this point - sell the piece of junk!
